Cambelt slipping

Engine had new belt etc when engine was out so was never tested, took it out for a test run once engine was back in and it seems like the belt has slipped, doing this it's bent valves :( no compression!

What could of caused this to happen?

Changed the belt, but not the tensioner.

Not correct tension > Possible slipped teeth.

Tensioners were changed, few people now said it probably wasn't tight. The lad who done it is a Renaul Tech and floats about on here. He's saying the fire before could of caused damage but I'm 99.9% sure it wouldn't of as all plastic parts were replaced and only the top tensioner at the back was a little egg shaped, and that was changed! Trying to find out were I stand really as it's not my fault my engine is now fucked!

unfortunately for you, this is why paying cash for a private job doesn't pay off. No Warranty.

ALL the tools used? including the pulley tool?

I don't know mate, I would imagine so as he's done loads before and they've been fine, now looking like a summer without the car :(

I didn't have much choice tbh :( the engine was sat out of the car so couldn't drive it anywhere.

Do you think the fire could of actually done something as I'm sure it wouldn't of!

I don't see how the fire could have caused it if you replaced any parts that had perished?

If it were me, I'd try and strike a deal with who ever did it rather than trying to demand a free fix, may cost you a bit, but it should get you a lot further.

At the end of the day, if it wasn't done right (even if something caused by the fire had maed it not right) then he should have told you prior to driving the car off.

if it's had a full cambelt kit on it, the only part left to be damaged is the cam pulley and crank pulley damper. Both the crank pulley and exhaust cam pulley have a rubber layer, could have been melted maybe?

My old engine done the same tim and was done by a respected specialist! It's currently being looked at and will have a verdict tomorrow what caused it. Tensioner being lose is looking best bet at the moment!

wonder if it's related to the supercharger? Could easily put shock loading on the pulley, and they do take a lot more power than an AC compressor

Might be worth adding a woodruff key to the crank, the slots are already there

Which bolt would you replace? There is less load on the aux belt now as no PAS pump. Adjustment is now an alternator bracket. Could aux belt be too tight?

Engine has been looked at today and bottom pulley was loose. 8 Valves have been bent, all pistons dented and one has been cracked :(

if anyone wants to donate some forged rods I can then put my forged pistons in. Not heard anything from the lad that done it either ....

i done the tutorial on here and i would say sounds like the mechanic fooked up.thats why i think its better to leave them pulley bolts alone unless the dephaser pulley needs to be changed as imo itsd not worth the risk of it coming loose and destroying your engine.french engineering at its best iam afraid i just cant understand why theres key ways on the cam and crankshafts but decide not to manufacture keys for them its like they 2 teams designed different parts of the engines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my bros xsara vts 167 bhp all you need to do the timing belt is pins. 2 go through the cam pulleys into the engine block and 1 for the crankshaft whats so hard about that!!!!!!!

anyhow mate i feel for ya hope the guy who was working on your car admits liability and learns from his mistake.

why would you not do it to spec though? 40nm + 110deg +/- 15deg from memory

it IS a strech bolt too contary to what some people think, it says so in the sodding renault book!

I always change the crank bolt when doing a cambelt

2 different specs, (as there is on the DCI also....same bolt) I use 20Nm +135deg.

Bolt IS a stretch bolt, with a length limit (in the manual). I carry 4 new ones
