Cambelt timing tool

  172 Cup
Hi guys,

Looking at changing my cambelt and aux belt soon with tensioners etc.

Both my cousins are going to help, one being a mechanic for Audi and the other a mechanic for an Independent. The one from an independent said he has the cam locking tool and the pin for the crank but does not have the tool which locks onto the cam pulleys. As we understand it, this tool is not needed for the cambelt kit change? He said it would only be needed if you were to remove the camshafts/pulleys? Can anyone confirm this?

Have you got the manual? If not PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it you.

Technically I think the answer is yes you should use it, just incase your new belt behaves slightly different when tensioned to your old one.

I've done it without any of the tools, but people always shout at me when ever I say this.

Sits back, waits for WWIII :)

I should add I didn't do this without careful thought and the experience of many other cambelts behind me. Had I had any problems I would have stopped and gone and bought the tools. The access is crap, but not as bad as my old 205 GTI.
