cambelt while the engines out help?

next week im doing a f4r conversion and while the engines out il be changing all the belts for new genuine kits, iv been on autodata and iv had a word with my mate and i can get hold of the specialist tools but iv done a search on here for a clearer guide. basically i havnt touched the engine yet its a 172 2002 reg, iv bought a genuine belt kit from the cars reg, but will it have VVT as a 02 reg???
and iv seen that 'apprently autodate guide is wrong' and is there anywhere i can get a pdf guide from a renault manual or something?

Google hard enough and you'll find the PDF, Autodata is wrong and yes you have VVT

Apparently the crankshaft pulley according to autodate needs changin with the belt? Does the dephaser pulley need changin with the belt aswell?

Crankshaft pulley bolt needs changing if it's stretched too much, but not the pulley. Get yourself a Renault pulley seal kit (which also comes with inlet pulley bolt and exhaust pulley nut). Whilst you're there also order a genuine crank bolt. Should cost you £30 (approx) all in. Dephaser is up to you.

Jus ordered a dephaser and pulley bolt, got genuine cambelt as aux belt kits aswell, be collecting them from Renault on the way home from work tnyt, I get on well with a few people there so hopefully they'll lend me a guide and the specialist tools lol

We no what we're doing just havnt done one of these before.

i got everything on trade mate, but i reckon 120 for cambelt kit (even on non trade is cheaper than K-TEC!!!!), 60 for aux kit jus collected the dephaser and bolt which was 175 lol, there just close prices as i bough them a few weeks ago and cant remember
How much was all the belts and stuff buddy?

Get it to someone who knows what they are doing

I think that's a bit of a bad thing to say..

Provided you have the tools, and you're a decent mechanic, you'll figure it out..

Provided all the locking tools line back up after its been rotated, the tensioner is set correctly and all the bolts are tight, your on to a winner.

People make the f4r sound like a wonder engine that only f1 technicians can work on... Trust me there are some monkeys out there that manage to f*ck up belts on the simplest of 8v engines!!

My mates a jag specialist who has his own garage, I just work in a Suzuki bodyshop but was in the workshop for 5years from the day I left school, I don't really need luck tho as iv got a mate at Renault that's got me the tools and a guide. Just because I'm not a 'clio sport specialist' and was just after some advice about the parts and the tools doesn't make me a useless cun*.

I'm a jag specialist too, the ajv8 (the aluminium v8 they've used since year dot... Albeit timing chain is timed up in a very similar way to the f4r, with free spinning pulleys and the like.
Intact the vvt and chain setup on that engines a hell of a lot more complicated than a f4r, so he'll be more than qualified to help you out

He his sh!t hot and he's only 22 same as me an his dads even better! They make me feel like I no fu*k all about engines lol, but where as they get me to do there bodywork lol..they do more lpg conversions now though but have always got new and classic jags down there

For the sake of £40, I'd take it to a specialist, get a reciept and have them time it up.Not doubting that you've not got the skills, but for £40, it could help you out come resale time.

im quite glad you said this tbh, every thread i read makes out that the belt can only be done by specialists or youll end up with 3bhp!! i always assumed that with all the correct tools and taking your time, then you will get it right!!

everyones fear attitude was putting me off doing mine myself while the engine is out in the summer!! lol

If I can take it somewhere for £40 then I will as that's a small price to pay to be able to get on with something else

i'm in the same boat as you i have removed my engine for a cleanup and i'm going to take to a specialist as ive heard alot of stories of people doing themselves and some gargages and it ending up in tears. Not work it for the sake of hours labour maybe

Took me a full weekend to do including the dephaser pulley right c**t of a job I should know I done the guide :)
Dont want to do another again even if I was on the dole to earn money.
Saying that the engines already out the car? Then it's pish easy!!
Mas most of the awkwardness is due to access!!!
i reused my crank pulley bolt and used high strength lock tight.
Dephaser pulley fit and forget.
