it should have been done a year ago, along with the aux belt.

I'd get it done sooner rather than later mate. It should have been changed after 5 years regardless of mileage anyway. I have an 02 plate 172 on 56k and recently had it done for just under £500 including the aux belt too. One of my pulleys/tensioner went dodgy so was lucky I think that it didn't collapse completely and take the belt off.

It's worth getting done for the peace of mind you get too... and it will be much more saleable when the time comes as I personally wouldn't go near one that hadn't had its belts done and were overdue too.

Renault say 5 yr or 72k whichever comes first - i recommend every 3years or 50k. Please bare in mind its not Renault that have to pay for the damage when the belt snaps.

There's always loads of scaremongering surrounding cambelts on most car forums but there are clearly good reasons for having it done. Just a shame it's not an easy job or a cheap one!

Just spoke and got two mechanics opinion...they both said not to worry about gettin it down atm, due it the low mileage, but do it on my next service... so i guess they no best thanks ne way :)

you're either lucky with one or you aren't. not entirely sure why you would want to do it in nearly half the time renault suggest though. i had all mine done at just over 4 yrs and 37k. me personally wouldn't do it every 3 years unless i was racking up the miles. all down to personal preference though.....

remember though its not only mileage that affects these. materials perish and degrade over time

Both the camblet & aux belt are overdue, that's all you need to know. Not what they tell you.

mine went not so long ago, 10,000 miles before it was due, thing was it was booked to be changed about 5 days after i snapped it...! £350 out of pocket but i got my clio back

^^well there the professionals:)

Cambelt change, the cambelt MUST be done before 72k or 5 years, EVERY 172mk1 should have had this changed by now DESPITE MILEAGE. Ideally this should be done before this around 60k or 4 years. This involves the replacement of the cambelt, 3 tensioners/rollers the aux belt and the tensioner. This is a very expensive job (£500-600 independent £600-£900 Renault). Some garages wont touch them and special tools are required.

More details can be found here - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=276875

Mine has just done 42,000 miles and I had mine changed on the Friday just gone (was coming up to 5 years).

Maybe they are the proffesionals.. But at Renault a couple of Enginers have been sitting doing tests, and they know a tad more then the local garage guy..
And you do see them snapping before time.. I Would get mine done instantly.. But then again, love my car to much to let something like that happen to it.

Spot on. You have no idea when its going to break, i would never tell anyone it will be ok after its overdue on age!:S

Are the people your speaking to Renault garages/ Renault specialists if not then they are most likely not even able to carry out the job let alone advise you on when it should be done.

Roflmao !!!! Your dudes know better than the manufacturers ?? Ok then.

They probably said it'll be ok so that when it does snap & you total your engine they'll be on hand to carry out the job.

The part are approx 260 from renault, plus vat.
....at least sum 1 was helpful:rasp: ...

It is a b4stard job and you really do need the Renault tools. 5-6 hours job for a car with A/C.

Might be worth looking at Angelworks, BenR is doing a special price at moment.

Cam belts have been known to go at 40k and less than 4yrs old. Try doing a search and make your own mind up whether to have it done or not.

£1200 for an engine re-build.:(

It isnt a very nice job (there are worse though), and you do need proper tools. As said above, Ben R & Rentech are down your neck of the woods! ish....:)

My mechanic doesnt have the REnault tools, he going to get a quote on the tools if there under £100 then he said i pay for the tools and the parts, he will fit it for free ;) so if the quote comes out gd i could save my self around £150... if not then he said he will sort it :) looking at £400-£500 i think any way. but if he has the tools then in the furture he can do other things to my car. :)

Screw the engine rebuild be a new engine time really. A freind of mine said I could get a new engine fitted at renault with a yrs warranty for about 1600 pound. I think that was with discount.

Really? I don't think they are allowed to do that, something about unfair trading or competition.

My cambelt just went on 52 plate 172 with 55k.

I think im looking at a grand for parts plus labour.

I have decided to replace the whole head, cams, lifters, springs, etc...

Either way its gonna hurt your wallet so just get it done if you have any doubts.
