Cams

  clio cup 172
Hey guys,

cars going into the garrage end of the month to have cam belt done.

iv been thinking about getting her cammed. Is it worth having it done while the belt is being changed? how much more work is involved etc?

What cams are reccomended...the car is a 182...also how much am i looking at for the cams and fitted?

cheers
Doncs

Cams are between £600 and £1000. Fitting I'm not sure, but shouldnt be much on top of the cam belt change.

Will need a remap on top of having cams fitted so about another £350 on top of the price of cams and fitting.

ok cool! Is it recommended to buy brand new ones? or would second hand cat cams be ok? im not going to a specialist to have my belt done, just going to a local garage who i always go to and hes good! would he fit the cams no problem?

^ make sure he has all the locking tools, I mean ALL of them.

Definitely worth doing at the same time if you can afford the price of the cams, as you won't have to pay the labour & parts cost (belt at least but more likely an entire belt kit) of taking the car to bits again if you were to do it at the separate time. Opinions are divided on various cams that run well on the standard ECU, it's more the matter of what sort of power delivery you are after than all out peak figures. Good mapping is also essential.

there is no local specialists any where near me! the reason i wanted to go to this guy is he gave me a very good price on the cambelt kit and aux belt! i dno what to think now :S

Where are you based? IMO its worth travelling to a specialist to make sure the cambelts done right. Hear of soooo many 1*2s with cam timing out.

Your right, there arent really any specialists near you, but definately worth the trip to someone like BTM to ensure the jobs done right.

cat cam 428's usually see 190bhp (with other breathing mods.. exhaust, airfilter, matched inlets etc.)

Has anyone got any 428's power graphs ?

Would like to do a comparison to see where everyones power is kicking in

engine dynamics has a set of cams with the same spec with colombo bariani.
this cost 499! withy other mods(remmap, exhaust ,induction etc) you will see 200+!

C&B spec cams, remap, exhaust, induction will NOT see above 200bhp.

Frank's car has 170whps, that will easily be at least 200, clios tend to lose largely thru the tranny. an 18% loss will translate to 200+ hps, though this will trigger discussion

do people advise against re-grinds? if so why? seems a cost effective way of gaining horses to me. Buy a set of cams send them to be done then drop them in come cambelt time :)

By regrinding you actually take material off at some places, so basically don't see how you could give more duration and lift (hence more power), for that you would need more material at the cam lobe (in general), you will though alter the profile which may help depending on the shape. Also you pill out the hardness off, which aint good for durability. For a long term solution I wouldn't go this route TBH. They wont last long.

...this was a ''Clio 3 197 Stock vs Clio 2 C&B Ultimate Showdown''!
the 172 with these mods is more powerfull than the clio III! 201.4 nm at 5300rpm!
