Can I fit cup dampers to my 172

  Fiesta ST-2 Finsport
Hello guys well I'm about to re enter the cliosport seen after, oooh, 10 years (valvers and willies) and fancy a 172. So a proper noob question. I know the 172 cup hubs are different but can I fit 172 cup dampers to my normal 172? Do many people do this now. Want the best of both worlds, comfy toys and leathers with cup-ish handling! P.s got my eyes on a Monaco blue 172 so I will post up if I get it!

Many thanks
Chris

Eibach Sportlines or Prolines.

I didn't know 172 cup dampers would fit a non cup,
I take it that it's only the 182cups that have a different bolt spacing?

I've got 182cup dampers on the rear as they were thrown in with the car,
should I add 172cup dampers to my list of mods then?

I've already got Prolines.

Cos there isn't enough of a difference to warrant changing good shocks for them, it's only really when it comes to replacing worn out shocks that people do it.

It didn't work on my Ph1 - F and R Cup shocks and Eibachs. Squeeled like a 70s American car going round corners. Took lots of effort to get the alignment right (at Protyre) and just never felt v.good. Eventually changed it all back to standard shocks and 182 Cup springs and it felt so much better (with Protyre alignment).

Prettt sure there is no difference between normal 172 and 172 cup dampers, its just the springs that are different. Same goes for the hubs, they are the same its the wishbones that are different on the cups.

As above, its a common misconception its the hubs that are different, but me and Mike from MWM recently rounded up Ph1/Ph2/Cup hubs and checked and they are all exactly the same.

The extra width on the front of a cup comes from a narrower rear beam allowing a much lower offset wheel to be used all round, which is how come they are a bigger difference in width at the front compared to the rear.

Cup wishbones are WELL worth fitting to a normal ph2 or a ph1, as they give a significant increase in caster.

This wouldn't make sense, the cup fitment and type Of dampers is no different to a normal damper, so how could they cause this? Were the cup dampers new?

Chip-mk1 this is very interesting, looks like I'll chuck cup w/bones on too! With regards to the rear beam, out of interest, can you explain further!

Fo a road car they are great, for a trackday car have a look at my thread about modifying the standard wishbones to give even more caster than the cup ones.

With regards to the rear beam, out of interest, can you explain further!

The cup is only about 8-10mm wider track at the back than a normal phase 2, but the wheels are 10mm lower offset each (ie the wheels make it 20mm wider) so the rear must be narrower on the cup.

Thats why so many of us thought the front hubs were different to explain the bigger difference in track at the front than at the back, because we missed the fact it wasnt that the front was wider, it was that the rear was narrower.

We've fitted cup dampers to ph1 and ph2 non cup clios and they have been fantastic, something went wrong with the fitting on his car by the sounds of it.

Wow I can't believe that after all these years and all the rs specialists about you found this out now, top bloke! I'm all over this now and thanks for the explanation!

Oh one last thing I thought if you use cup suspension you needed cup driveshafts too?! I want to use the cup dampers and w/bones but don't wanna do the drive shafts too

No, you can use cup wishbones on normal driveshafts, there is a load of nonsense floating about with regards to shafts as well TBH.

im pretty sure the 172 cup shocks are different to the normal 172 ones, slightly stiffer. wish i had kept the original sales brochure i had when i bought my cup new years ago.
