Can not come to a decision

  Clio 172
OK I'll start with why I'm in this mess

I bought a Clio 172 in broke, after 2 holidays i was able to save up buy some bits and get it on the road. So this is a minor problem but been off the road due to lack of funds. So I had a plan but due to another set back it didn't happen. At this point I thought f it! Last week got my mind back on it only to start thinking I really can't be bothered, its almost like I have a hatred for the car.

Do I keep it, spend the little bit more on it it needs and another 10ish hours getting it on the road. Or break it! It is a good solid car but has a good low mileage engine, h&r coilovers, mint interior, tidy panels. So I think I could make over £1200 in bits.

Also thought about replacing it with a DCI Clio and putting my sport kit on it, so still have a smart looking car just economical.

I know it sounds daft but its only a daily to work and its not as if its a super fast rare car, I won't be doing track days, I don't have loads of money to throw at it. But........... Seems mad to throw away a decent flame red 172 with, a good engine and good coilovers.

Help me!!!! Please!!!!

Fix it, have a drive in it and then you'll know what to do. Much easier to sell in one piece and much less hassle.

Maybe I am being ambitious here but from what I have seen the price of truly tidy 1*2s seems to be on the rise - not a load more but still a bit of a rise and I am not talking about the cars which are mint despite having a couple of dents, ripped interiors, iffy dephaser pulleys, kerbed wheels, iffy electrics ; you get the idea...

With that in mind and it being a not so common colour ; there is only 1 Flame Red 1*2 near me as opposed to 2-3 Trophys I would say to throw in another engine or to rebuild what you have (what needs doing to your current engine and why did it break in the first place?). Once that is done drive it and see what you then wish to do.

TBH I am in a tricky decision with mine. I was offered an absurdly high price for mine a short while which I did not take stupidly as I am trying to think of what else is reliable, comfortable, fun and relatively frugal and in the case of mine not "really" and hopefully not needing any major work for a good while (I've done the brakes, cambelt/dephaser and the electrics are spot on) for the same money as what mine is worth.

I have considered getting more grown up cars like a Volvo 850R, Mondeo/Focus ST 2.5T but while they offer a cruiser type of aspect they are not quite as fun and you do notice the difference in fuel consumption.

I assume you have broken cars before and you probably also know that it is not easy to do from a hassle perspective ; i.e dealing with people wanting something for nothing.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you. Yes I've broken cars before, always made money though. But yes you get folk want odd things, 1 thing of a pair, things cheap and then get left with a the shell and bits folk don't want.

Regarding want needs doing is soft really, I've bought most the bits, just got to fit belts, clutch and tidy up the loom. Drop engine in, go over everything with a checklist due to standing for so long.

I think if I go to the effort of finishing it I'll keep it.

Like I said I think it's more that the car has been a bad omen, but if I get it running and enjoy it, all will be forgiven.

Thanks for all the comments

^^ +1.

Finish what you started and it'll sell for equal money with less work (breaking it etc.)

Yes your rite I know it, just really lost the love for the actual car. As you know @Mr Burns it may of been a simple thing that pissed me off, but just thought I'd this car just here to f**k me off.

It's my own fault as I like things to be just rite, and I had made plans to get it in and running, so when I had this set back it just gave me a headache.

Part of the French fun mate. You'll be more disappointed (well I would) that I came that far and packed it in.

No worries.

If you wish to know about a bad omen, you can check out my Triumph Stag and Escort RS Turbo thread. They are old cars admittedly but both have been awkward in their different ways.

I'd like to say that the Escort is better now and the list certainly has grown smaller of what is an issue but it has taken alot of perseverance! I guess I have put on 5k also on a car which has not really been driven over the years!

I'll have a read of the escort when I have time. Nearly bought a mint s2 rst a few years back, I changed my mind after driving my mates 220bhp one, scary to drive as it was all over the road with torque steer and the one I was looking at was 180bhp but sooo laggy it was hard to drive.

Then @Mr Burns knows about the series 1 we drove down from Midlands to the south coast to buy, only to find out it was a pile of shite!!!!! A day wasted for both of us and cost me £80 in fuel for the pleasure.

Mine isn't too bad to drive with 230BHP but I suspect it has no LSD. I plan to fit a Quaife and see how it behaves.

As for shitters out there yes there are plenty that look great in the pics. This one was quite local to me and it was a little beyond my budget but not much pricier than alot of the dross out there.
