Can the dephaser be knackered but silent?

  Mercedes AMG GT
Hi all.

Have a problem woth my 182 track car. I've had it 6 years & it's been apart many times. However this time round it will not time up properly. I have genuine tools & a full genuine belt kit. Haven't changed the dephaser as it's been done in the past only changing the belt due to oil contamination.

No matter what I do once it's been run a while the timing slips out. I'm sure it's not me as I've done it many times before so I'm wondering if the dephaser can be worn but silent? The exhaust cam is out anti clockwise and the dephaser is out clockwise which leaves me perplexed.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  dan's cast offs.
are you locking the pulleys when you tighten them up? are you tesnsioning the belt and running belt through a few times before you tighten everything up? cams and pulley faces free from oil?

also are the directions from looking at the pulleys? if so how far out? could be close to group n timing so leave it:astonished:

Yep have the pulley locker in & new bolt & nut even.
It's spotless. I've done it three times this week and same every time. Directions are from pulley end.
Always run it back & forwards umpteen times before fitting it back up.
