Can't select gear - what's up?

pulling out of a junction today i changed into second and had no drive. pulled over and i can't select any gears. i got under the car and moved the linkage around on the gearbox end (not the gear stick end) and it feels very loose. is there anything obvious i can check or is it likely something more sinister?

Can you move the gearshift into all positions with the engine running or do you need to have it switched off?

i can move the gearstock into all positions with the engine running, doesn't matter if the clutch is depressed or not

Check the spring under/on top of the selecter arm on the gearbox

i think the spring's ok (it was a bit dark last night) but i'll take another look

i can put it into 1st and 2nd with the engine running and clutch out. if i try and put it into 3rd, 4th or 5th it starts to grind with the clutch out. when its in gear the speedo goes up but no drive. it seems like something inside the gearbox isn't selecting a gear. when its in gear, the speedo rises.

i'll add that when i'm changing gear (either with the gearstick or directly with the linkage) it's moving like it should and slotting into position. the linkage feels a tad looser than it should but what i can see from under the car looks tight.

Get it on a bridge and check the spring under the selectorarm.

is that the spring that forces it back into neutral/3rd/4th alignment? right at the end of the linkage just before everything disappears into the gearbox? if so then that seems to be doing it's job, the linkage goes up and down at the spring and resets itself if i knock it out of gear.

unless i'm missing the point...?

Not if it grinds into 3rd, 4th and 5th. Do you get drive in the higher gears? Sounds like somethings gone internally in the box tbh. 1st and 2nd share the same selector.

no drive in any gears. don't think it's clutch, else i wouldn't be able to just put it into 1st and 2nd with engine running. unless the clutch has welded to the flywheel (???) and it's always engaged.
it's going into local garage tomorrow. if they have to drop the box out i'll get the clutch done regardless. and some new engine mounts

well, car has been recovered to garage. rac patrol said it was clutch, they mentioned something specific about reverse gear. will report back once garage have called, probably tuesday.

it needs a new gearbox. chap said the differential has gone. have been quoted £700 for a box from their supplier, £300 + vat to fit, then obviously cost of clutch. ouch.

so, can i get a cheaper box and what should i be looking for? it's a cup, i think it needs something different to normal, something to do with the speedo?

ull get a box on clio sprt fro #240 mate and 300 to fit there ripping your eyes out!!!! i have a brand new clutch for 45quid posted if you want it i had it as a spare for the track car but went paddle.

God i charged a lad 100quid to change his box on xmas eve!!!

yeah i'll take the clutch, assume it's the same clutch for 172 cup and 172. cheers.

just seen a box for £250 so i've PM'd the lad.

i do have my reservations about using a 2nd hand gearbox as what if it goes the same way as the last one, but that's the chance you take to save a couple of hundred i guess. if i get a 2nd hand box, clutch aside, is there anything i should get the garage to replace or check while it's out?

Depending on the condition on the rest of the car... service history, tyre condition, brakes etc. etc. bodywork etc.

but not alot with a dead gear box

Oh, and you can put ANY JC5 on the car. You just need to get the UCH reprogrammed to state GB or ABS sensor for the speedo.

I know a guy who might give you more nearer the 1500mark for it. With a good GB it would be worth around 2.5K ish, so without I doubt it's 1500quid less tbh.

For a cup, you need a cup 'box or Ph1 172 box.

I'd say it's worth £1k-1200 without a 'box. Or, that's all i'd pay.

i thought the phase 2 had closer ratios on their gearbox to compensate for the extra weight?

although i wouldn't be too fussed with longer gearing, as long as the box fitted and worked the speedo

i had thought about doing it myself. i can do most things, just the gearbox/subframe combo freaked me a bit you make a very tempting offer!

car is currently in garage awaiting instruction. where abouts are you based?

it really isnt a bad job to swap the box over...

in you had a garage with ramps / air tools etc. 4 ~ hrs is achievable

very kind of you- that's a great offer of help! i think if it had been before i got it in the garage i would have defo taken you up, but labour at garage to this point is £160, plus recovery back to mine £30, cash for you say £100 plus £20 petrol, that's around £310 fitting and the garage want £310 + vat for the whole labour costs so it makes sense to leave it where it is. if it's ok i'll definitely keep you in mind in future. i'll go for that box in basingstoke. if it fails in a couple of months, check your PM box because i'l need help swapping in another one!!
