car battery, spark

Alright peeps, today i was changing my brothers car battery for his polo gti, i took it to the garage and they swap the batterys and stuff, but they said the battery is discharging alot of power, even tho the car was not turn on, they said this becasue when they were connected the red lead to the battery and then the black lead to the battery there was always a spark when it actually touches.

i wondering if it really means that theres a discharge just because theres a spark between the lead and the battery when connecting it (surly there would always be some sort of spark), or is the garage trying to have me on and get some easy money????

any ideas??

I would have thought it would spark anyways as you are completing the circuit, when i connect mine up it sparks and its no different to what it always does, does it in my friends laguna and my bros megane

  Polo + Micra
has he got an amp in there??

because that will draw a lot of current to charge the internal caps

Every time i've changed a battery tehre is a spark, always happens, even if the car is only drawing a small current, which it always is

It's always going to be using a bit of juice... they always spark a little... more so when you drop a spanner across it. lol.
