Car chugs/pulls forwards when accelerating?

Hi,

ive just bought my first car, renault clio 2002.

Yesterday morning the car chugged when driving to work, its like when i accelerated a little nothing happened and the rev counter remained stationary and then all of a sudden i lurched forward?

Very worrying.

On the way home yesterday it was fine, i also went to the supermarket last night and it was fine.

This morning the same thing happened, i could not maintain a safe steady speed by holding the accelerator in the same position as the car would go faster automatically as if i quickly pumped the accelerator???

Could this be because of the cold?

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks very much for both your answers.

I can say that it is neither of those two things?

Does it sound like a cold related issue?

Thanks

sounds like it could be a tdc sensor, lambda sensor causing misfiring or something.... does the car sound normal? does it only happen when cold?

Yes it only happens in the cold, ive had the car around a month now, its been running fine, it first happened yesterday morning when i left at 06:30, my drive to work is only ten minutes and it worked fine home and to the shop again.

This morning same problem on the way in, im assuming it will be fine again in the afternoon?

Could you please explain what those sensors are and what they do if you dont mind, sorry, im a new driver you see and still learning about the car.

Many thanks

Tyrie :D
