Car not going over 6k

i have a 172 cup i have a problem that at just after the 6000 mark it hits a limited its as if the engines is cold. Even after an hour long run the car starts 1st turn and temp needle sits as normal. it slightly splutters at 5.5 k then goes to just after 6k and it hits a limited its been doing it on and off for the last week but now its doing it permenatley any ideas?

Sounds like a temp sensor isn't reading correctly.

what sort of of temp sensor do they have more then one ? as the guage on dash still reads perfect?
