Thanks Girlracer, sickening site, much worse at second view :(

Martin172 What makes it worse is the time it took to really go up, seemed less than 4-5mins, which is the time it takes to pay for petrol at a petrol station. I have to say Im guilty of leaving the kids in the car while I do this. Not something Ill be doing from now on.

Its just shocking, still trying to look on the bright side, kids ok, me ok.

BUT quite simply THIS shouldnt happen to a new car

Thank goodness it didnt happen at the petrol station Hippychick, otherwise you might have gone up with it!

Thank christ your safe and werent actually sat in the car when that happened. Imagine if the auto-lock doors function broke and you got stuck inside when something like this happened? OMG i hate to think of the consiquences....

Hope everything is better soon, you have my deepest wishes.

Si.

renault really piss me off. they should commision you with a special 4seater V6 with fire exits. b******s. just imagine how many cars from manufacturers are shoddy and life threatening?!?!? they never seem to care much... replacing a car is fine but they cant replace your life, court action doesnt seem to get anywhere... whos to blame?? engineers or bosses? truly iam affraid of what may happen to mine, i hope they address build and design issue with the new shape clio RS (megane thingy) i though they were always goin on about how safe their car are? iam 100 percent sure they no of design probs and will sort them out in the new cars for 2005... but will their customers come back, i wouldnt.

sorry for whats happend

My gut instinct tells me after speaking to the dealer that Renault might be trouble, but TBH I think the longer I go without the Clio, the less likely I am to have one back.

I just keep going over things with the car, some not worth thinking about.

But then i made a choice about it, based on what i knew, its just from this point on, would i really want another ???

But being a lease car, do I really have a choice ???

Sorry to see your pics - its not a pleasant experience watching your car go up in flames, but at least no-one was injured.

Similar thing happened to my Dads car almost exactly 3 years ago - and that prompted me to go out and buy a fire extinguisher which lives in my car to this day.

Id strongly recommend that everyone have one in their car - as has been mentioned imagine if you/your kids/mates etc were stuck in the car and you had absolutely nothing with which to help fight the fire....

Good point - fire extinguishers are one of those things that you only think about after an event like this when its too late!

Try not to think about what *could* have been HC, youll only torture yourself with nightmare worst-case-scenarios. (I do it all the time!) Concentrate on where to go from here - Im thinking independant inspection before Renault have a look just to cover your back. Im sure there must be accident investigators who you can hire? I dont know... At least get plenty of pics from all angles, including underneath if you can get it on a ramp! I think for evidence purposes, youd be better off with a normal camera as proper photos cant be tampered with as easily as digital so you have more solid ground to stand on. (See, worst case scenarios at work in my head again!) :)

Least your ok.Renault should pay for this,it is a new car after all.Get renault customer services number off your dealer. They are obliged to give it you it if your not satisfied.

Lesson learned! I left my kids belted in to my car at a petrol station just yesterday whilst the bird was inside paying and I went for a pee! Wont be doing that again!

They will try anything to put the blame on someone else, be in mods to the car, someone else servicing it etc etc
Still in shock, the girl I spoke to from customer service was kinda helpful, but then said things like well it doesnt happen very often, then I asked how often, she said couldnt say really.... Then I ask, couldnt say or dont know ? she then said couldnt say......

Am I reading something more into this or what ???

Now Im thinking F**K just HOW often does this happen ???

Its a legal issue, it sounds harsh but they will never say sorry until its proven to be their fault.

Its like you crashing into a car and admiting its your fault.

Really sorry to hear hippychick, but this isnt the first ive heard of a situation like yours.

A guy who used to use this forum, wont post name, bought one of the first Cups...About a 4/6 weeks ago his wife hit a cerb lightly and broke a wishbone, then as she was on the phone explaining her mistake, the loom set alight and went up in smoke, just like yours has. But i very much doubt bumping a kerb could trigger this. Hippy, i can give you his email address and you can get in touch to see how far hes gone with it.

Terrible Terrible Thing.....Thank God you and your family are ok!

No point Dwelling on the past tho from my own experience..Look on the bright side, youll get a new one, and it will treat you ten times better.!;)

I ment that in the nicest way possible.....

if renault are not gonna admit a fault, presuming there was one, is there much chance of somebody going to auto express or watchdog?

Dont you think all 172 / cup owners should at least have the right to be told that there could be a potential fault?

Maybe all of us on here should get onto renault and demand answers!!

Tom

p.s glad ur ok

f**king hells fire.

I know im a few days late but havent been on the site for a few days. Made up everyones alright. Hope youve been in contact with a solicitor this is one serious issue. Especialy if its happened before.

Made up ive ordered my skoda instead of a 172 (did i just say that).

Well renault did do pretty crap in the top gear survey.
Skoda did ACE.

Once again made up no one was hurt. Good luck in getting it all sorted out.

Thank you ALL again,

Had loads of Pms, Emails, phone calls and generally good advice.

Got a forensic specialist looking at the car this week, he looked at the photographs of the car and said hed need to take a look to be sure, but he has a good idea already where the problem lies. I also have a good friend who is a barrister so ive had legal advice in abundance.

Missing the 172 like mad and still gutted about what happened.

Added up in total how much weve spent with Renault over the years on cars and company cars, quite shocking the firgure we came to. Nice to see Renault value their major customers.

:devilish:

why is renault so crap? luckily i have had my willy for about 9 months and i havnt spent a penny on it, touch wood! hope you get it sorted, good luck

If Renault stiff you or treat you bad - goto Watchdog, trading standards etc, and NEVER buy another Renault. To be honest I cant see how it would NOT be their fault.

Glad everyone is ok though.

But I loved my 172
well all i can say is that obviously these guys mustnt give a monkeys about there customers.... maybe you should just get a different car and hope it doesnt start grilling your burgers and sausages before you get home like the last one..... either that or you ask them to throw in a chefs apron, hat and barbecue utensils

Well my cup went the same way on sept 6th this year, The wife hit a kirb at less than 10 mph on the drivers side , got out and phoned me to explain and the car caught fire under the bonet , after a couple of minutes trying to put the fire out it was to late. Renaults answer is the drive shaft was pulled out and ripped the wireing loom which caught fire , An independant inspector claims the fuel lines were damaged and that is what started the fire. Renault were not interested with what a private investigator had to say , there words " we are happy with our conclusion with your car and are happy with the safty of the clio, case closed". I have already e-mailed watchdog and what car etc , and not really much help there , They need more cases of the clio catching fire. What i cannot believe is Renaults attitude towards the incident , They could nt give a flying f**k and the car had just been in for its first service two days proir to the fire. I doubt this is a coincidence either , i think there is a problem with the fuellines , i just hope next time it happens no one is hurt. Very disapointed with Renault and shall never buy a Renault product again.

Seems like something is coming together here, best of luck in getting back what you deserve. I hope there are enough other cases to highlight the problem and get it sorted!

BOTH !!!

Wiring loom and cracked fuel lines have both been highlighted as the main components that have caused a problem, Ill know more when the fornsic chaps looked it over, Ill keep you informed

INSURANCE Comany have inspected the vehicle and said its a manufacturers fault/problem....

I dont have a copy of the report yet, but now im stranded without a car from Monday onwards, as the insurance will not pay out to hire a car and have handed the case back to Renault....

So much for a new car being far less hassle :(
