Car wont idle... eek!

  M2 Competition
Drove my car off the drive to wash it, everythings fine.

Spent about an hour cleaning, and tried to start it up again...

Engine light, and electrical fault light came on. Car went straight to idling at 3000rpm, and stayed there. Cant rev the engine at all.

Turned it off and on again, and car goes slowly up to 5000rpm, and then slowly back down to 3000, and stays there. Have tried it a few times now, same each time. Still cant rev the engine or move the car at all, and is idling stupidly high!

Anyone any ideas?

Right, have disconnected the battery, will leave off for 30mins and see if it sorts itself.

Everything seems tight and well, and didnt wash the bay so is completely dry. Hmmm...

Exactly the same to me m8. Cant suss it?!

I broke down on a round about so my dad came fidled wit the wires going into the rev unit and it started ok. The engine light is still on tho.

Checked the wiring going into the throttle pedal? Give them a tug and a wiggle when its running see if it does anything.

Right, have reconnected the battery, and car starts fine, idle settles at 2k, which is still a bit high. Will let me rev the throttle pedal, but the revs climb really slowly, and will only climb to 3k. it then settles slowly back down to 3k.

Eliminates throttle pedal being at fault i guess.

I had this once before Dan, it was a dodgy airflow sensor or something in the throttle body that feeds into the plenum thing.

As the ECU can't detect any readings it hunts around at 2k rpm trying to find something. Got mine done under warranty by Mike luckily.

Gutting, hope you get it sorted mate.

Ah, cheers mark. Have a free homestart with the aa, so the guy is on his way to have a look at it. Does seem like a sensor of some sort.

Reckon it'll cost much? lol

dam mate :(

i aint got a clue about this. First thought youve wet the electrics, leave it to dry and see what happens.. but that only works with a mobile phone.. lol.

let us know wat AA think.

Forgot to add mine wasn't recognising throttle inputs like yours isn't as well.

It could be the damp that caused it to fail maybe?

To fix it on mine I had a new throttle body fitted...probably a bit pricey :(

possibly worth checking spark plugs Dan.... i had something similar and had water in the plugs even though i hadnt washed the bay.

Mine once idled at 3k and i shat myself, i took it for a drive and it went away and hasnt come back since, iirc it happened when i hadnt driven it for a while.

Right...

Aa man has just left, had a clip laptop thingy, and the fault codes stored on the ecu were throttle sensor and 02 sensor both faulty.

Reset the faults to try and trick it, but it remembered - doh!

Its now idling fine, around 950rpm, but is in permenant limp mode, wont rev above 3k. Least it drives eh...

Have checked everything is dry, alls fine in the bay.

How much you reckon for those two to be replaced fred?

MAP sensors aren't expensive iirc, i had one die on me on my 172. You can fit it yourself too.

The throttle position sensor is more complicated though iirc, i needed a whole new pedal assembley when it went on my old dynamique. not sure whether they replaced that just to be sure though, as it was done under warranty

Cars back today, turns out it was a sticky throttle body, which in turn was causing it to idle too high, and the other faults to register with the sensors.

£58 for it to be sorted, drives like a different car now! Dead chuffed :D
