Carbon Canister - what's wrong with it?

I have noticed a tapping in the engine bay, that has been gradually getting louder. It only does it once warm, and after about a minute of idling. I have done some searching on here and found out that it was most likely the carbon canister, so I got the bumper off and had a bit of a look with Jon.G. Pretty much straight away it was clear where the noise was coming from, and when you put your hand on it, you can feel it tapping quite hard, see the video for the noise:

Anyway I had read that you can take them off and it will be fine, so we unplugged the hoses and the electrical clip to see how the car would run, one of the hoses was sucking air so we bunged it up, almost immediatly the car cut out, when trying to restart it it would start, then cut out on idle. So we removed the bung and put it all back together and it's fine now, just still tapping.

My questions are:
  • What causes the tapping? More out of general interest tbh!
  • Is there a fix?
  • Should I just buy a new one, and if so does it come with the top connecter piece, where the electrical point is?
Thanks in advance.

ive read threads where people have cleaned the electrical connectors up and has solved their issue so could give that a try

They all do that , its normal. But if its excessively noisy it'll need replacing thats it.
You cant stop its normal function tick, tick, tick, but i have read on here somewhere that removing it is an option just a case of blocking off the vent pipe to the engine and one from the tank. Poss EML lamp comes on if wire is dis-connected. But the option is there.

I had read that too, but when we blocked the two pipes up, the engine cut out?

It is excessively loud yeah, like you can hear it very clearly in the cabin on idle.

Yeah, some people said you can simply remove the canister, but in all honesty I wasn't interested in removing bits and leaving things unfinished.

I got a new one from Tom at Wests and fitted it one morning. Fixed it perfectly.

It's not too hard to get to it (bumper off), if you start the car and touch the canister, you can feel the top of it tapping away, that will confirm if it's that or not.

I need to whip the bumper off anyway so Ill do it all tomorrow I think.

Hope its just this, it's not really coming from the deaphaser area and that was changed 10k ago anyway. Maybe spark plugs?
