CAT5 cabling - WTF?!

Ok chaps - please tell me I'm being a proper bell and making these CAT5 cables up wrong.

I've got the cable stripper, the CAT5 plug, the crimping tool and plenty of CAT5 cable to practice on. What I'm short on is both patience and talent.

How the funk do you get all 8 wires to slide into the CAT5 plug cleanly? There must be a knack to it?

Any help or sedatives would be useful. ;)

Its easy. Just line them up between ur four finger and thumb and slide them in.

Its not rocket science.

You do know the colour order dont you?

1st: Whit/Green
2nd: Green
3rd: White/Orange
4th: Blue
5th: White/Blue
6th: Orange
7th: White/Brown
8th: Brown

It's pretty easy.. once you've done one. Heh.

Dunno if there's a knack tho.. it just, goes into the RJ45.

Simply mate, just ensure you trim enough of the plastic sheathing away so you're not struggling. If you cut off more than you need to, get the wires in order and then trim the 8 strands until it snuggly fits the RJ45, then you will get the best results.

Yep, I've got the colour codes ok, but I just can't get the wires to go in smoothly. Either one crosses over another, or one kinks, etc.

It probably just takes practice?

Like on a previous post, some cables are crap to work with, mainly the ones taht are too flexable. Also you need an RJ45 plug that is a decent quality, these vary from one manufacturer to the other but basically comes down to how the cable guides are laid out inside to guid the cables to the pins without crossing etc.

Heres my little routine of putting a plug on:

1. Trim the sheath of using the sheath trimmer on the crimper.
2. Pull the cables out slightly for a few mm more length.
3. Arange cables into the correct pair pattern.
Which is:
For a straight through cable, do both ends in the following:
White Orange
Orange
White Green
Blue
White Blue
Green
White Brown
Brown

If making a crossover cable do one end as above and the other end the following:
White Green
Green
White Orange
Blue
White Blue
Orange
White Brown
Brown

4. Pinch the pairs in the correct order between finger and thumb.
5. Now as you pulled that extra few mm out of the sheath trim all of the pairs so the ends are level using the cutter blade on the crimp tool.
6. Guide the cable into the plug.
7. Check everything is in the correct order and crimp.

there prietty simple to do , once u get em in right order hold em in a flat line , then snip end so there all level , place in the end then crimp

and whats wrong with cat 5 , i personally prefer wired networks over wifi shite . its faster for starts 1000mbps over 300mbps

f**king hate making them. Also hate doing cabling og any sorts. Usually big cabling jobs we outsource some we do. Had a b*****d of a job when putting a new server in a solicitors. Had to dismantle half the roof in the cellar to run a cable LOL

Is a fiddly job, once stripped and in the order, pinch them tight and slip them in

Wish I had the equipment and ability to do fibre cables. Fibres' friggin excellent from the stuff I used - zero issues and fast as feck too.

We use a fibre backbone between all our 5 buildings on the business park. No electrical problems, static, distance issues, etc. Great stuff - and quite cheap these days!
