Center silencer removal

I've been seeing a few 197's have had there Center silencer replaced with a straight pipe , just a few question if people would be kind enough to answer :-
Would this damage the rear box ?
Would this decrease performance ?
Does this make it sound better ?
Would it pass an mot without one ?
Roughly how much would a garage charge to do this ?
