My clio dont have the black sensor thing, but key is exactly like that.

Cant you try the spare key?

The battery in them is only a watch battery / lazer pen battery.

I have the answer to all of your query's tonight....

Basically that key is a infa red key, very old school on renaults behalf, that black thing is the infa red reciever and the "light" is the infa red tranmitter....

This soon got phased out for the radio control central locking without the black thing or the light.

I THINK, don't quote me on it, but if the key isnt working, get in the car, hold down the central locking button (in the car) until the immob light goes red and stays red, now point the key at the thing and press it until it locks/unlocks and then the key is synced.

I was told this once by someone, but it never worked as my key was broken, hope this helps.

Well the car had been sitting for 18months so the car battery was f**ked could this have affected it at all?

un-synced it lol

Edit: since ur being helpful check my faults one too ;)

I have no idea about the "un-syncing" of it all but first port of call is new car battery and then two new batteries for the key, give that a go, if not with the new batteries in both, give the thing I said a go.

You'll know if the keys works, or if it is dead, because that little clear bit on top will flash red.

I think my car was exactly the same as this one, i'll have a look at faults now. lol.

Does replacing the battery on the key fob possibly restore the range? As mines abit dodgy.

Sometimes it only locks the boot aswell, and not the doors! :| But sets the alarm.

It might, my old clio the range got quite bad often it would work from a distance and sometimes it would only work when i got within 2-3metres

Tried the thing you said robbos and had no luck, might have to take to renault...

Bummer, so you've got a fully working battery and replaced batteries in key?

When you press button on key does the little clear bit on top flash?

The key internals can be a bit unreliable, check everything is connecting properly.

And before taking to renault, take to a good independant auto electrician or key person, will be cheaper and A LOT better.
