Changing an alternator (16v)

  172 Cup

its a bugger of a job!! best to take the drivers side headlight out i think as you would have better access to it.

yeah headlamp out, loosen aux belt tensioners central allen lock bolt, its a 7mm allen key, then use a spanner to turn tensioner to loosen belt, undo alternator bottom bolt and top mounts (where it attached to manifold etc) and remove alternator through headlamp aperture, if you still struggle for space take radiator out, but its not reallt necessery

Its not such a bad job if you follow the Haynes manual, I opted to take the bonnet off, front grill strip and the drivers side head light for improved access. The worst thing is trying to get hold of a 7mm allen key!!! I used a 7mm bit in the end. Getting the tension right in the belt can take a bit of time, it needs to just right otherwise it will make a right din! Saved me £180 by doing it myself.

PM me if you need anymore info.

A little tip if you are finding it hard to get the allen key onto the tensioner. is to grind down about 10mm off the end of the allen key this makes it easy to get to the tensioner cap-head bolt.

a good tip, you wont ruin your 7mm allen key, cause its the only place I have ever used that size (maybe vauxhall front calipers is the only other time I have needed a 7mm) and it can be tight squeeze
