Changing bearings.

Went to GSF today and got me some fromt wheel bearings.

was considering doing them myself.

Actually changing the bearings doesnt seem to be to much hasstle.

Am just worried about all the work to get the hub off.

Is it a job i can do myself or am i best taking it to a garage?

Cheers Bailey

Easy ish job mate, what side is it?

Simplified...

Crack the hub bearing dont undo it yet
Jack it up - safely, 2 axle stands etc
Dog the wheel off
Dog the strut bolts off
Dog the track arm off
Dog the ball joint out
Disconnect caliper and carrier
Take the hub nut all the way off
Knock the shaft threw the hub (old cars = loads of lube is ideal)
Dont pull the shaft too much if its N/S you might lose G/box oil
Pull the hub off
Get the circlips off (You'll get new ones so dont be afraid to destroy em)
Press old bearing out
Goto press new bearing in,
Phone up GSF and tell them they sent you the wrong bearing

p.s. Where are you located mate

The hardest part really is getting the bearing out of the hub, if you cant get it out take it to a local garage and pay the mechanic a fiver to press it out, the rest you can do yourself.

4 days ago i put 15tons of pressure in a front hub bearing, out mk2 1.6 Clio, using my mates press, f**king about with sockets and a hammer is too much of a pain.

Personally, i would just the the hub off, which is piss, and take the whole thing to a local garage and let them do it, my mate who owns the garage only charges a fiver for this.

Perhaps the fronts dont have clips holding them in, i could be wrong there. Have you looked at the present ones?

nah not yet, doin them on monday.

Want to know before hand incase i need them cos i dont wanna take them off and find i do cos then i am screwed (no way of getting to local renault)

Also does anybody know what locking compound i am supposed to use on my driveshafts on re-assembly?

Cheers Bailey

All bearings should be supplied with circlips so Id take them back where you get them tbh so I was told when I tried to get mine pressed in without circlips! went back to the shop they apologised and said sometimes they forget + leave them out.

As for the the drive shafts im guessing you mean on the hub bolt? The bearings should come with new locking nylon bolts, these will do fine.

didnt get circlips supplied with 2 sets so am guessing they dont come with.

Got nyloc nuts but Mr Haynes says the driveshafts are said to have locking compound on which obviously would need replacing on re-assembly.

Anybody else?! :)

Just re-read my Haynes manual, do need circlips and do need locking compound on my "driveshaft hub splines"

So, where can i get circlips,

and, what locking compound do i need?

Cheers again, bailey.

The hub nuts can/might have a bit of plastic on the end which supposedly locks it, but really dont do much.

If you get a new hubnut use that and a bit of lock-tite

Go back where you got the bearings and ask for the circlips they shud all come with them as I said above, where else would you get a specific bearing circlip??

As for the lock-tight, I've never bothered and I re-use hub nuts ALOT, and they have never come loose. So I would have thought a nylon-nut would be perfectly adequate if done up tight enough.

ps if Haynes says use it then DEF do not ;)

ive only done rear bearings but i find it much much less hastle to just remove the hub and take it to a local garage with the bearings and get it done then take it home and put it all back together.

i get it done free at a mates garage but most garages will only take £5-£10 per side

Exactly what I did, easiest option tbh!

Am going to get the bearings pressed at a garage but am doing all the other work myself.

Will ring GSF on monday RE: where the bloody hell are my circlips! lol.

Ahh will leave the locking compound unless someone else tells me otherwise.

Thought my new hub nut should do it just thought i would check.

Thanks for all the help, sometimes you guys make me sex wee! lol :)

:)

Gawd i am so scared of driving it atm.

Squeels like a piggy.

O well at least wen theyre done i wont have to worry cos thatll be all 4 replaced in the last cupla months :)

Well just refitted my hubs with new bearings in, ended up taking GSF ones back :(

Unfortunately its money wasted. it wasnt my bearings.

Turns out the wear sensor wire had come loose and was rubbing (couldnt see until 2nd hub was half off) and my steering was dodgy because I think a bush in my steering/tracking arm (dont know what it is) is gone (no resistance in it)

How much/how difficult to sort.

Help is much appreciated :)
