Changing cambelt myself!!! Can someone confirm a couple of things please??

  Ph1 172 & Audi S4
Ok I know I'm gonna feel a world of hate it but I plan to change the cambelt and aux belt on my ph1 with the help of a couple of mates! One of whom owns his own garage, the other is a motorsport tech and the last has done a couple in the past. Between us we are pretty happy with the process after reading the guide on here and going through the 2011 Autodata book over and over.

A couple of things though! The guide on here states that if I'm only changing the cambelt and not the dephasser pulley I only need to use the locking tool on the cams at the gearbox end. Is this correct?? Obvioulsy we are changing the belt and tensioners using a genuine Renault kit.

I've seen the part numbers for the Renault tools about but can anyone confirm the part number for the laser tool? My mate has one that's for the 2.0 16v and looks correct but I'd like to confirm the part number before starting!

Finally I see a few specialists have said the auto data book show incorrect torque settings can anyone confirm the correct torque settings??

Cheers Ade

yeah auto data is wrong iirc, you have the genuin renault tools ? one of the specialists will give you more detials soon, i have no idea about torque settings

The renault manual has all the torque settings required.

A renault mech I know says he would do as the manual says and only use the horse shoe tool if not removing dephaser or exhaust pulley. But on here you'll get flamed for that.

Loosening all the pulleys is the most accurate way to do it though. I've done it both ways, can't say I noticed any difference. Only undoing the crank pulley makes the assumption that the new belt has the same properties as the old one.

No only have the laser horseshoe tool but wanna confirm the part number is correct before proceeding!

Mark123 - where can I get the Renault book manual? Anyone have a PDF?

So if I loosen the dephasser and exhaust pulley that's when I then need the other locking tool?

If you don't loosen the pulleys and set the belt tension on its marks, as soon as you turn the engine over by hand the cams will move out of position - hence cam timing will be out, hard to explain, but i'm in the process of making a video to show the ins and outs of why and how **** ups happen on the F4R

if you're NOT going to loosen the dephaser and exhaust pulley then you will have to mess about with the belt tension to get the cam timing anywhere near correct

again hard to explain

but if you read the renault guide VERY carefully, from memory i'm pretty sure it does say that VVT F4R 730 series engines must have the pulleys backed off (yet it shows a diagram of a non VVT setup and a big x through both pulleys, stupid and obviously where the confusion arises)

While your there video the whole process from start to finish and charge £20 per download... seriously, I'd pay it.

I don't think the video would make many more people choose to do it themselves rather than take it to you, it would just help those who have already decided they're going to do it themselves.

I'm not fussed where you take it, trust me my marketing skills are crap (check out my website for evidence LOL!)

All i want to do is highlight why and how people **** it up
