Anybody changed the spark plugs on a MK2 172 and what plugs do ya recommend ? When you remove the cover on the engine ( not the plastic one ) does it have a gasket and will it need replacing ?

Cheers , MrBillyUk !

72k i wish !! I'm on 46k at the moment . Last year had a problem with it juddering up 2500 revs so i took it to a local garage for ecu checking out and it turned out it was the spark plugs so he replaced em and its been as good as new ever since . I was gonna look at changing em myself every 12k from now on , just wondered how easy it is to do as the spark plugs or hidden under the engine cover , not as easy to access as the other cars ive had .

Cheers MrBillyUk .

So hasn't anybody got any idea about changing the spark plugs then ? And if i remove the engine cover is there a gasket underneath it ??

Cheers , MrBillyUk .

You need to remove the intake manifold and replace the intake gasget I think from memory.
Noone has chnaged them as they are good for 72k inless somehting wierd happened.
Plus at £20 each (Renault ones are the best) people don't want to change them to often.

I changed mine on a mk 1 172 at 45K just because id bought magnecor leads and thought while i was in there id do them anyways.

You need to take the plastic cover off, then undo the plenum chamber i think its called. You need to also undo the induction hose which connects to your throttle also - sounds complicated but its just a few nuts and bolts.

The plunum chamber lifts off and is sealed by rubber o-rings which locate in slots. On mine they were fine and just lubricated themwith silikone grease. Vaseline would do the trick if you have any of that!! (hee hee!)

Just watch the o-rings when you put the plenum chamber back on so they dont get caught and bolt it back up. Once its on and youve connected everything back up fire her up and listen for any sucking noises coming from that area - shouldnt be any if the jobs done right!

Done that on my car about 6 months and no problems - so i assume i did it right!

Just remembered theres a metal plate reinforced gasket on the outlet side of this plenum chamber.

just be careful and it will come off no bother, again mine was fine so re-fitted it.

hope this helps.

So what plugs did ya use , cost etc ... ? Why did you change the leads to magnecor leads , were your originals knackered ? How many "o" rings are there and if i do manage to nip one can you get hold of em easily ? I can see the metal gasket at the front of the plenum chamber its sticking out slightly , hopefully that should be ok when i get round to changing em . Gonna wait til the weather gets a bit better and when i do em i'll take some pics .What size of spark plug socket did ya use . Sorry for all the questions but your the only one whos come up with any useful info .

Cheers m8 , MrBillyUK !

Hi Billy,

I got the spark plugs from k-tec think they were quite expensive maybe around 50 - 60 quid odds for 4, just changed the leads cos i had a spare bit of cash and theyre relatively cheap anyways, thought it couldnt do it any harm.

Im sure your local renault garage has the o-ring. Im sure theres only one! but really you should be okay taking it off - when you put it back get some silikone grease on it to stick it in place and youll be fine.

Cant remember what size of socket it was - it was one of them special ones with the rubber inside them for removing spark plugs. Would go and check, but im working offshore near Saudi at the moment so a bit difficult......

cheers!
