I used a thing which was a rubber strip & a handle which you could adjust, it grips it & won't mess it up. It's along the same lines as an oil filter chain removal tool. Got it from b&q.
Can peal back the rubber from the old one..then use a big wrench type thing to twist the hard plastick bit off inside..it has smelly fish glue holding it on. sorted takes 5 mins
