Changing to Braided Brake Lines

  PH1 172 Sport
In anticipation of my braided lines turning up next week I just wanted to check that I understand how to do it!

From the search I've done I assume you just remove the old ones allow the brake fluid to go everywhere and then fit the braided hoses or should you drain the fluid first then remove them?

Also I'm assuming that if you leave the fluid in then remove the old ones then theres going to be a hell of allot of air in the lines. If so how much fluid do you normally use before all the air is out?

Sorry if some of the questions are stupid but I just want to double check everything!

do not drain

I would clamp the old flex.
Undo it Nearest the wheel 1st.
Then undo the other side and as soon as its off put your finger over the hole to stop any fluid coming out.
shove the new one on.
Done done done :)

Open the resevoir cap and put a latex glove over hole then screw the cap back on.

Vacuum stop it leaking out the lines :p

I've just done mine. Loosen both ends of the pipe before you remove either, then get the new one on quick, end nearest the reservoir first. Then let gravity pull the fluid through the new line before you connect up the other. I lost hardly any fluid and mine needed hardly any bleeding either. I just let gravity pull the fluid through to bleed the system as well. Use some rags to catch the drips.

never drain the system, nightmare if you do

Had a feeling it would be.

Latex glove and clamping sounds a good plan. Ive got some castrol super response to go in there as well as its got halfords 5.1 in there at the moment which I dont particualy trust!

Thanks for the help guys!

Just a quick question how much fluid do I need to bleed the system? Just over 1 litre I thought?

i'd read on here that you needed a litre, but mine seems to have changed fine at around half a litre (using ATE Blue, so i could see what was going on)

Sorry doesn't make much sense now ive read it!! To do a full fluid change after ive changed the hoses as its got some halfords 5.1 in there atm and I want to go back to dot 4 castrol super response.

Wish I had managed to find ATE blue cheap enough as it would have made it easier!!

^ Air gets trapped in the abs pump and can be a bugger to get out. Iv never had a problem but then ive never drained the system completely

Would have some braided lines on mine now but I got a friday afternoon set of lines from Ktec and one of the threads for the front was wrong :(

Gotta post them back, get the new set then think about doing them some other time. I want to change the fluid as well so that blue stuff sounds handy.
