changing upper gearbox mount

  monaco 172
Got a slight nocking noise when pulling away so im going to have a go at changing the upper gearbox mount seen as its the cheapest one lol.

ive got a powerflex dogbone so thats ok.

also does the lower gearbox mount ever cause problems? it never seems to get mentioned.

finally, how do i change the upper box mount, cant seem to find a guide? Any special tools required?

^^^Yeah mate. The DS one usually knocks, and doing this can cure it. GB one not so much, but it's not hard to change. Nothing special needed.

if its doing it on normal pulling away revs then something is likely loose, i'd check the bottom nut on the upper gearbox mount (nut accessible from the wheel arch) it has been known to work itself loose.

if its doing it on high revs, then loosen the four chassis-side bolts on the engine mount and pull it forward. retighten. have a search, plenty of threads on pulling the engine forward. the knocking is the manifold/cat join hitting the top of the subframe as the engine rocks back under acceleration. there's only 1cm clearance.

Ok hers guys.

Well my nocking is only on very low revs when pulling away. Does this sound more like gearbox upper mount?

I take it the 1cm clearance is for a 172? My 182 cat to manifold joint has plenty of clearance

didnt realise you had a 182
ignore the cat comment. with the engine cold, stick your hand down the back of the engine and try and get a finger between the manifold and the small heatshield, bet you can't! that's how close it is.

knocking on low revs.... i'd associate that with driveshaft/cv joint. what if you pull away at high revs? or if you gun it past 5.5k in 1st or 2nd?

Hard acceleration in first or second is fine, just get the annoying nocking when pulling away in first

Lol no worries mate

Quick update on this.

I was just reversing off the street to goto work and as it was a slight incline I just left it in neutral and rolled back with steering turned slightly right and the nocking sound was happening then as the car sarted rolling.

This makes me think it's not an engine mount problem as the clutch wasn't engaged and the engine would have been moving much at tickover

Help, it's doing my head in

Have u jacked it up and spun the wheels by hand? Where abouts r u?

While its in the air then check for vertical and lateral play in the joints by giving the wheel a good shake, should feel the knock

In Rotherham. Yeh the wheels seem to spin ok and no movement that I could see. I'll get it up again tomorrow and see if I can feel any play.

Fred, how much is a ball joint likely to cost me? And is it a big job to change?

Just done another test. I'll be jacking it up tomorow.

If i turn the wheel all the way left and then all the way right I getthe nocking noise about halfway round. This is sat on the drive not moving with the engine running
