I would give it a good going over and if it didn't look too bad I would buy it. Won't lose that much, it's only a cat d.

For it to be a cat D it would have had repairs upwards of 4/5k ie more than half the value of the car.

A rear quarter repair doesn't come to 4/5k+. Would be nice to have a look at the job they have done.

^I was thinking the same! There has to have been more damage then a dent in the rear 1/4!

Still at 7k for a good car on 11k it would be worth a look/drive of for anyone that doesn't mind a previously bent up car.

Nah, something's not right. 'Minor repair to the rear quarter' is £1k-2k at an expensive bodyshop in my books. For it to have been sufficient to be a Cat D there's more to this tale...

You'd be suprised what they write off with little damage, ive seen loads of examples, a DB9 with 1 scratch on the bumper cat D, flooded caterham CSR250 cat b, flooded ran and drove fine, no signs of rust etc was all dry when we got it too. Also if you have it stolen or pranged you can refuse to have it back and get paid out for it.

You are saying an Aston Martin DB9 was written off for a scratch on the bumper... Are you actually saying those words? Seriously?

As for the Caterham, all fresh water flooded cars cannot go back onto the road due to contamination.

Ive seen taxi drivers down at my work asking when high-tide is (in winter) when theres been alot of rain and the river is likley to burst its banks so they an leave there cars questionably closeley parked to the river...!

Pricks!

He means it has a projector light on one side and a non-projector on the other, according to the pics. Quarter repair writing it off is b****cks.

if u also look at the first pic and the reg , and then look at the 3rd pic the reg is different , the 3rd shows a R as the 2nd to last number and the first show's a C

Well i looked at the pics and it was a crack below the headlight and its a panel that connects to the roof but pretty much f**k all if you ask me.

All cars were written off and ive shown the only damage they've had.

Pearcy that mini is worth nothing anyway. All r/h suspension would probably write it off!

The lotus would have required a rear clamshell so it would be a straight forward write off.

I don't care particularly what the guy 'thinks looks like a write off', the fact is that on an R27 a metal quarter panel, boot lid, bumper, light, wheel, stub, and glass:

a) Isn't £5-6k.
b) Isn't minor rear quarter damage.

As you've said the Mini's worth a fiver and cosmetics rarely write 'normal' cars off. The Aston, so it's got a crack on a panel which goes up to the roof - that's got to be expensive, plus if it was under a year old and first owner the owner will have got a spanker - what happens to their car (gally, you may be able to answer this!), is it written off?

The Lotus is at least a rear clam as Gally said, and you're looking at the steep side of £10k from what I can remember of the sales guy telling me I really, really didn't want to crash mine.

^What about the DB9? It doesnt 'look' that bad! lol

As above, maybe gally can shed some light on first year bumps and write offs and new cars and whatnot.

Ah didn't read it was in it's first year. It's a simple write off tbh mate.

They replace your car like for like if you wish, if you're the 1st owner in it's first year of registration.

You don't have to take another car from them tho, you can get paid out as normal with cash to buy a different car but the insurance company at least give you the option of taking a new car.

I don't know whether it was in it's first year or not, just putting that one on the table as superficially at least it doesn't look like much to sack off a £100k car!

Tbh Mike sometimes circumstances dictate weather it's a write off.

The repair bill would have been 30k at least. I fixed an audi with 25k worth of damage so it can easily add up especially with aston labour at £90/100 per hour. And parts.

As I was saying circumstances come into play, how much would the insurance company get for salvage, is there any chance of the repair costs going up once repairs have started and tbh they take into account a little if you want the car back.

You don't make the decision but if it's close they will take your view into consideration.

Granted, and I'm sure very quickly it can run into megabucks to fix! But to a passing glance it didn't even twig where the damage was, so that's why my suggestion.

I know I laughed when I seen the crack on the bumper.

I'm a very good estimator but 1 picture of a bumper isn't exactly helpful.

The f**king chassis could be bent quite easily from where it's been hit (no joke btw)

Wouldn't surprise me, they're designed to be like a £1500 mattress when you run people over now rather than hammering the ding out of the metal bumper when you reverse into a post...

Well we actually bought the Mini and the Lotus, Mini required a front bumper... Its was a huge spec one too, sat nav, aero kit, wheels, recaro's etc easily a 6k car written off for a grand at the most bumper.

Lotus - You clearly don't have a clue, a rear clamshell is again about a grand at the most from Lotus themselves and a sill £500.

DB9 - I still don't think the repair cost of that panel will be 25k.

Insurance companys can write cars off for very little damage or the owners can refuse to have them back, just don't jump to conclusions about a car you know nothing about. If your suspicious and the owner doesn't have damage pictures, don't buy it... simples.

And fresh water flooded cars aren't all cat b's daniel...

A clamshell is about a grand? What have you been smoking?! Lotus parts are obscene. Scuff both and a £25k car is a write off. This is from a Lotus approved body repair specialist... Maybe acheivable if you use pattern parts, but insurance companies don't and even then I think you're struggling.

Someone taking some big back handers from a salvage guy possibly?
