cheapish performance upgrades for my ickle 1.2

  Renault Clio 1.2 Mk1
ok, so i just bought a clio versailles 1.2, fully standard with 40k on it for £600.

so am looking to do a few performance upgrades, but i aint gota ton of money. anything anyone can recommend? and how much are we looknig at? and named products would be nice too :)

thank you!

give it a full service mate

then consider changing the standard air filter element for a performance one, and the exhaust system, also maybe a de-cat, they free up performance and are very cheap

if your thinking about chipping it, the Hill Power ones are the best value for a 1.2

as brun said, full service. eitheran ITG panel filter or a sealed incutrion kit, decat, and cat back exhaust. I wouldnt do anymore to it performance wise. just lower it alloys, colour coding etc.

What Versailles is it? Phase 1/2 or 3?

If its a phase 3 DIET engine (i.e 8v MPI), I have an uprated cam and spare cylinder head sitting here plus K&N IK on ebay atm...

Phase 2 then, I got a 96. If you want to get an exaust get a full system-k-tec, powerflow-youll prob pay from 200 up. Dont get an induction kit, get a performance element to replace the standard one-maybe about 40. Chipping it from 150 up-hillpower or primaracing or bb. once thats done you can get uprated cams, gas flowed etc etc.

Depends relly. There were two sizes of the 1.2 engine a 1149cc 60 bhp and a 1171 65 bhp one. I started with the 65bhp one and ended up with 89bhp! But have started selling things off like the cams have gone etc-putting a 16v engine in:)

i dont neccassarily want more bhp and stuff, just for it to have a little more response and derestrict what is there so to speak.

depends how much you're looking to spend

A decat will give you a few extra horses for very few £'s

Removing the rear seats will increase the power to weight marginally so it'll feel that bit more nippy

best thing you can do with a 1.2 is lower it and upgrade the brakes then if u want get a pannel filter and full s/s catback exhaust and decat.

even if i spent £1000 on my engine i doubt i could get it round a tight backroad any faster than i can now that its lowered :)

decat for £35 is tempting, but i dont do weldng and what not, so...

have been offered a s/s full system for £170, not new, but in good cond.

am getting it serviced quite soon, so may get a panel filter put on it then.

Decat will take 20 min to do, You just got to take the cat off then put decat on. Make sure you keep the cat handy for the mot! Will give a deeper sound too.

i have 1.2 1997 (as it says to the left). i didnt have much money so heres what i did performace wise, and the result i got:

Induction Kit - i got a cheap one from halfords, and made up my own bit of pipe, easy enougth to do. it made the car more responsive and possibly more torque up the hills. also sound good!

De-Cat - My original cat broke, so when i took it off, i simply broke up the insides so they dropped off, then put it back on. defo incressed bhp by something, very noticable!

Peco Powermax exhaust - aided in the free flow of the exhaust, plus sounds very nice!!

TSW Alloys - look nice

I also took it down the garage to make sure it was burning the right air to petrol mixture...

[sinse then tho, my big ends went on the engine (had done 80k), so iv had the massive task of putting a new one in! all done now tho! but the driveshafts are knocking now...i think my clios on the way out!!]

^^^ yeah i pity me to! lol. if it wasnt the big ends, it was the main bearin, eitherway the engine seessed up one night, and when i got it going the next day the banging noise gave it away lol i had checked everything else, even the piston rings were ok! im gonna fix it up over the summer tho :)
