Checking Oil

I know this may sound like a stupid question but when/how do you go about checking your Oil?

From Cold?
Hot?
Run for 10 Mins then leave for 10 Mins?

Reason I ask is I'm thinking I may need a top-up but don't want to be topping it up and there is already enough Oil in it,
I've heard so many people check theirs in so many different ways so just want it cleared up.

I'm a Detailer not a Mechanic

Cheers

Cheers..... Cleared that up for me..... Its easier if warmed to change it though is it not? i.e to drain the oil out?

  53 Clio's & counting
yeah right there fella, when the oil is operating temp ( normal is usually around 80-90 deg) it is alot thinner, therefore runs out easier. bloody hot on your fingers though if your not used to it (i dont have feeling in my hands any more lol)

Lol.... I'll get someone else to remove the Sump Plug then and watch them scream :)

You change the oil when hot and after a drive as then any stuff that would settle out should still be suspended in the oil i.e. you get more of the s**t out.

I've never bothered waiting until cold to check my oil. A couple of minutes standing is all you really need to get a decent reading.
