Checking the cambelt is timed up properly

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
how do you check to see if a cambelt is on properly and the cams etc are properly timed in? there are no timing marks as far as i can see :(

also, how tight/loose should the cambelt be, on mine i can wiggle the belt around quite freely!

just wondering if it might have slipped a few teeth :S

(on a ph1 172 engine btw)

no timing marks, there is a pin that goes through the block and lock the crank and then u have to remove the two oil caps on the back of the head and lock the cams in place.

iirc the belt should be quite tight

as above, you have to remove the oil seal caps and need the tool to lock into the back of the cams

(you will need to replace the cam seals when you remove them)

then the pin to lock the crank

i have the kit to do this which i will sell!

quick vid showing the cambelt play...

th_cambelt.jpg

seems far too loose to me

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
in pic two, the notch in the top of the pully bearing (sorta 10oclock) should be lined up with the (tiny triangle) on the right hand side (3 oclock)

ah... do they ever work loose? or is it shoddy workmanship?

so i guess the cambelt has slipped?

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
cambelt has prob slipped a few teeth yer,

they dont really work loose unless the bolt was never fitted right.

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
so, ive gotta take the cambelt off, realign it all, cambelt back on and tension it up properly?

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
yea, then hope no valves are bent from when you have been cranking it, runing it etc.

you need ALL the tools though to ge tthe right tention on the belt, there are no keys its all friction fittings

ffs :(

this engine is gonna bankrupt me :(

anyone in the south east fancy doing it for me?

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
rentech mate,
it takes like 40mins at most if the engine is out of the car!

mike has done loads of them too! plus you already have the new belt on etc

need someone to come out to my house ;)

just I don't want to have to spend out more money on the tools to only use them once (even though they may be handy in the future)

I feel sorry for you matt, this is slowly turning into a nightmare for you.

Chin up mate, you will get there in the end and it will be so worth it

  LY 182
look up how long it will take me to get from rm78lx to you and i'll pop over and time it up.

  LY 182
or if you want a crack of it i'll lend ya the tools and the autodata pages on how to time it up.

  LY 182
im working this sat, im at rs tuning the one after than and should be free the one after.
could sort something then but i can imagine you'd want it done before that
tensioners out by alot cant see why it would have been fitted like that if it has jumped teeth i think you are looking at head off.
would explain your compression/missfire problem.
if you do want to have a crack asap say the word and i'll post ya the tools (long as you post em back lol)

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
yeh would want it done earlier :D

if i've bent the valves, it would show up on a compression test wouldnt it? - I'll go get one of them done before i continue with the engine... if it fails the compression test.. i don't know if it's worth me pouring more money into the engine.. as i could spend out on new HG and £75 worth of head bolts and a torque wrench etc.. only to find that the knock is still coming from the BE and the lump is beyond repair :(

it's a very generous offer though ditz! :D

  LY 182
it will show up on a compression test yeah
i'd time it up first though as you never know you might be lucky

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
there's a company local to me called 'mobile cambelts'

I'm going to buy a compression tester tomorrow and test it

then I'm going to call them and see if they can time it up for me..

Looks like they haven't put the peg on the back of the tensioner in the correct slot on the head.
