Checking timing question

I've got the timing tools but do I need to butcher the cam seals and replace with new ones to check the timing?
 
and the horseshoe should slot in with MAX a tiny wiggle, forcing it even slightly doesn't count as "yeah timing is fine mate"
 
Whilst you're there check there's no "play" in the inlet camshaft from a worn dephaser as this will 100% add some advance to the timing knocking it out slightly. General rule though is as per Freds post above.

No but use the genuine ones as the APA versions are s**t! They leak baaaaad and some fit so badly the oil pressure pops em out.
