Chipping

Is there any way for the insurence companyies to ACTUALLY know if you have had ur car chipped. Im a big fan of declairing everything to the insurence comapnies, but im 18, been driving for about a year, have a 1.2 clio and despiratly want more power. I have a sports backbox fitted, didnt have enough money for full system, getting induction kit soon, but with a 1.2 ive been told the power gian is only likley to be about 3 BHP.

Yes they can tell. Sadly chipping your car wont do anything at all.

Without opening up the ecu itself, theres no way for them to know and since its a mk 1 theyre probably not going to be too concerned as its not going to be worth £ks. Obviously if youve had an accident and your car screams "boy racer" they make take particular time over an inspection!

As for the more power thing, the chip prob aint worth it. I know a lot of people will say "if you want more power, sell it and get a quicker car" because you aint gonna get anything noticable from the 1.2 lump. Still, its up to you! You might want to have a look to see if theres a cam kit for your car as this will give you the most power.....have a look at http://www.catcams.be/http://www.catcams.be/ as they seem to do kits for smaller engines....

Hope this helps!

Is yours a multi point injection or a single point injection?

If its single point it probably wouldnt know what to do with itself if chipped.

Err...they do - on their website theres about 12 renault engine types listed. The website is a bit sh1te so make sure youve clicked everything.....

Chipping with give a few hp but very often so few that its not noticable a 172 seem to get about 8hp with a chip so a 75hp engine would get about 3hp they do however give you slight better power delivery.

Try this page for details on a chip which give a few extar hp http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=60349&PagePosition=1&ThreadPage=1http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=60349&PagePosition=1&ThreadPage=1

Only diesels and turbos will give you significantly more power with a chip due to being able to high more injection and higher boost.

I have heard from an insurance investigator that any cars suspected to have a fiddled ECU after a crash will be taken away to be checked. As many cars can now be remaped without it being obvious. Dont risk running your car with a remap worth only a few hp without tell your insurance company its mad. Insurance companies dont often check ie they didnt on my dci after crashes but its risky not telling them.

While not a Clio a mate of mine had a chip on his 1.4i Golf and he got 4kW and 7Nm just from the chip...Only thing he noticed was better low down pull.

He bought a new car, and sold me the chip for under 50 quid, which is a bargain, since early next year Ill be taking my car to be de-catted, get a replacement filter, maybe even a BMC CDA and then Ill chip
