Chirping noise from O/S/F wheel.

Hi,

This noise is doing my head in! Started yesterday, and only does it when I'm at a constant speed in a straight line. Initially I thought "wheel bearing" as it went quiet when I turned right but then I soon realised it goes silent whether I turn left or right. It disappears under braking, is there when I'm coasting along (in gear foot off accelerator.) I've jacked the car up and theres the slightest bit of play in the wheel and a very faint dull clunk which I'm not sure is the bearing. My only other thoughts were brake pads/discs. Anyone ever had this and know exactly what it is? I'm saving up for dephaser/cambelt etc so ideally would like to get this sorted on the first attempt.

It's not the wind whistling, its definitely a squeeking/chirping noise.

I've had similar, turned out to be a lip on the pad going over the edge of the disk. check your disks/pads

Thanks, I'll have a look at the discs and pads tonight. Is there a rotor sheild on the front brakes that could be coming into contact with the disc?

Me too! Though mine is more of a squeal and doesn't disappear when turning.

I had convinced myself it was a sticking caliper.

I'm pretty sure I've narrowed this down.

Took the wheel off, inspected the disc and the side facing away from the car was fine. I check the other side and:

Now I'm not mechanic but that doesn't look normal at all to me!

The culprit?

Just need some discs & pads it seems (I hope!)

The was also a caliper slider stuck. Managed to free it up, grease it and its fine again now.

i was actualy going to say could be one of the engine pullys, making the noise when theres no load on them.
