Cleaning up engine Block and gearbox etc

Whats the best things to use to clean up engine block and gearbox ?

I was thinking of a wire brush and some form of de-greaser.

Ant particular degreaser people found better or any good methods of preparation for cleaning then painting ?

Brass wire brush is good to clean up the alloy parts
