Just wondering if you are able to remove the foam filter within the housing or whether you have to clean it in situ?

you can buy viper cleaning kits from potn.com i usually hover mine then wash it leave it to dry and spray the dirt retentive on it

regular K&N cleaning kit should work, follow the directions, always spray cleaner on the dirty side, rinse from the clean side. There is a little can from pipercross for oiling but again K&N filter oil also works.

Cheers lads, I have the cleaning kit was wondering if the foam element within the carbon housing came out, would be easier to clean and maybe more effective

No, you can't remove the foam and clean it. Its a damn stupid way of designing it.
