next up is brakes, now on the MK2 im sure the 8v has 139mm brake disks and dont think there vented so you want a big brake conversion, possibly use 16v brakes (159mm vented disks), if your doing that i would just go for standard vented disks and uprated pads, this is what ive got (EBC green stuff pads) and it works pretty well.

(infact its all im doing/done with the engine untill i can afford a 1.6 16v conversion)

Very good advice there Martin but the brakes at 239mm for the 1.2 8V and 259mm for the reast of the range any scrappies bound to have one in stock you need the caliperrs and the mounting brakcets new pads new brake lines and the bigger disks.

Why save for a 1.6 though? A 172 is the only one I'd ever consider.

cant afford 172 insurance and 1.2 is at 122,000 miles and ill have done about 140,000 this time next year if i keep doing the same miles im doing now, just dont fancy putting all the work into an engine conversion for another 1.2 16v lump because it wouldnt give me anything to look forward to when im getting pissed off doing the conversion hehe

Why not just get another 1.2 then? The swop much easier a few hours and you'll have it done. Second hand 1.2 engines are dirt cheap.

You need the gearbox plus driveshafts and radiator and accociated plumbing. Then you need to figure a way round the ECU unless you want to swop all the looms. You could get a blank 1.6 ECU (£300 or so) and use that or get the 1.2 ECU remaproggramed to run the 1.6 engine.

to be honest probabaly better to just to stick a 172 lump in, as its more regularly done or just buy a 1.6 and transfer the bits over (i know i considered this)

and if i sold mine i would need another £4,000 or so for a good 1.6 16v, its not going to cost me anywhere near that much for the converison.

^ your prob looking at the best part of 3 grand just for the engine and fitting, without rear discs (which prob arent needed) suspension and all the other gubbins eddes mentioned. You can pick up a good 1.6 for silly money now, if you can indeed find one. That is of cause unless you have a mate who can fit it for u etc etc.

You can pick up 172 phase 1's for less than that.

Yeh but putting a 172 engine in a 140,000 mile bottom end clio is surely not worth it. The structure and chassis wont cope as well so youll have to replace most of the car! Just put another 1.2 in it and wait until you can buy the real thing. Im stopping at 78bhp and prob buying a A3 1.8T at end of summer. With 4 years no claims itll be ok.

conversion would have no labour costs since i would be doing it myself with the help of mates, only thing i would have to payfor would be parts.

brakes are fine, rear disks arn't needed but would probably be done at a later date, suspension fits im sure?

chassis is fine, probably slightly weeker but remember its only 4 years old plus can use my exhaust and sports cat (when its on) on the 1.6 and theres no need to change the dials

Which makes this conversion such an expensive and long task to do!

clioscotty - Ive got a mk1 - I have put 16v brakes on with uprated disks and pads, put uprated suspension front, lowered torsion bar on rear (waiting for new rear shocks!), cat back exhaust system, decat, gas flowed head, stage 1 chip from hillpower with remap, eco tec valve, uprated clutch, uprated headgasket, replacement filter and re routed cold air feeds, front and rear strut braces. Ive prob missed something but you get the idea. Ive got reciepts totalling over 3k but that includes the wheels, and fitting for the clutch and head gasket. oh and I have taken out rear seats, shelf etc.

Im doing a total overhaul on the engine over the summer and going to put a different manifold on if I find a cheap one as its not breathing as id like it to!

At the end of the day its your car and you do what you want to do.

the weight of the engine means you need to have a different suspension set up iirc. but fair dos if your giving it a bash yourself, if i had the balls i'd give it a go lol

my mates got a Starlet GT turbo, standard apart from an hks filter and a blitz backbox and even he couldnt beleive how fast mine was for a 1.2, obviously not near as fast as his starlet, but compaired to what he was expecting he loved it.

said it handled twice as good as his starlet, he even said himself he couldnt beleive how s**t hot it handled! and how quick it hits 100mph for a 1.2!!

i am so confused about this thread... no idea what "scotty" is trying to achieve. I didnt understand much of what you said anyway.. (no offense, i just cant read text speak).

I do understand the 1.2 owner's need to make their car different as i have one myself, but lets be honest, with so little power to start with, the increase will be minimal, so whats the point. I'm just making it look nice.. then hopefully sound nice.. until i can afford a better car.

Which in my dreams is a V6... in more reality is a 172/182 or maybe a clio 3 rs in five + years time.
