Clio 1.5 DCI problem

My mates womans clio broke down last night when she was doing about 70 for about 20 minutes and the car slowed down, there was a rattling/grinding noise and there was a loss of power and whenever she tried to use the accelerator again there was no power and when she pulled over some smoke came from the left hand side (battery/fuse box side). She left the car for 5 minutes or so and then it started but still felt a bit sluggish and the noise was still there but not as severe.

I had a look under the bonnet but couldn't see anything wrong there was no oil anywhere, car looked okay didn't see anything wrong.

Any ideas on what this could be? Cheers.

Clio dCi what? 65, 80 or 100?

My 100 blew a Intercooler pipe of. Loss of power and sluggish, also smoke from battery fuse area.
Worth a try!
