The Clio 2.0 138 is very good. Excellent engine/box and brakes.

However, the car itself is s**t. s**t seats, s**t steering wheel, s**t colour options, s**t options.

IMO, i'd have a fiesta ST. In white.

Just drove a limited edition M-Sport fiesta on Monday. It's based on the zetec S and I tell thee what, it was bloody good. Handled superbly on 205/40/17s and it was a lot more of a giggle than a new clio (unfortunately). Get a petrol zetec S is my reckoning.

Petrol Mk5 Zetec S is only 98bhp though, sod that, same as a 1.4 Clio. The TDCI is the one to have I believe.

Drove the TDCI WITH the 107PS power upgrade and it was seriously lacking guts and had quite a lot of turbo lag. At least with the petrol you've got quick response and you can rev the whatsits off it, making it more fun. Even though it's less powerful you've got more revs to play with etc and it definitely gets my vote.

Eh? Well if you just want straight line speed then you're never gonna get thrills in this sector of the market. However.... if you want thrills round the corners you can either go for the 'only' 98bhp fiesta with a sorted chassis, sporty looks and effing superb suspension that allows you to go round corners with a big smile on your face, or you can buy something with 140bhp or whatever that's quicker in a straight line but looks like your gran owns it, wobbles off the road whenever you get to a reasonably tight corner, or else leaves you fuming at the amount of body roll and the lack of feedback of any kind. Buy whatever you like mate, I've made my point!:)

Yes thats right, i've got no idea what i'm talking about...

Fiestas are poo. TBF, Clio 3's are poo unless you buy a 197.

I'd rather have a TDCi Zetec S over a 98hp gutless shopping car.

yeah. the seats are atrocious as is my spelling. lol. Same for everything else about the car.

Wouldnt bother tbh, id sooner get a new dynamique 1.6 or one of the other higher models.

Lol at everyone argueing with me.

From Parkers:
1.6 Zetec S 3d (05) 9.9 s 114 mph 98 bhp

The previous generation Zetec S (MK5) are 102bhp and are much more fun. Two of my best mates have Zetec S's one has an MK6 06 petrol, the other has an 51 Imp Blue 1.6 previous shape (MK5). I ve driven both, the older one annhilates the newer one both in handling and acceleration, to be honest the mk6 feels gutless.
Having said that I researched them extensively before I bought the Gti and the MK6 is very well put together, its nice to drive, looks smart and the leather seats are nice. In TDCI form its the one to have.

For clarification, I think the original poster means MK6.

I recently had the same choice. 1*2 or Fezza ST.

Did alot of research into the ST, but have always wanted a RS so got a clio. For me what tipped it was that the ST only puts out 150bhp ish for a 2.0 whist the clio can do 1*2, so for the same amount of fuel = more fun. Found a decent enough 172 so went for that.

Oh, and the fact a S/ST is decent trophy money should be enough to put you off.

I cant fault our 138 goes like stink returns 35mpg its no hot hatch in the handling stakes but a Zetec s aint either and as far as power the 138 is'nt far off the st150 pace 127 top end and 8.5 to 62 mph, Seats are a bit unsupportive when pressing on but apart from that it ticks all the boxes for us, and its stomps all over every other petrol clio for high speed cruising bar the V6s

No offence intended in that post so don't misunderstand me, but the petrol zetec S is a much better option than the diesel in terms of fun because even with the 107PS power upgrade the diesel is too slow and dull. At least being able to rev the pants off the petrol makes it feel fast and exciting. Tbh I reckon it would actually be faster too as long as you work the 'box, but it's late and I'm feeling lazy so I'm not going to check that lol.
