Clio 16v reliable No!

  A SHED!

Im fed up with my 16v, Ive replaced nearly everything on the car and now on the way home my left caliper pops out thus losing my ebc pads down the road and damaging my wheel on its way. List of things replaced in 6 months of owning the car:

Fan belt, cam belt, clutch cable, brake pads and discs, shocks and springs, driveshaft, alternator, 2x wheel bearings, cv joint, various powersteering components, sparkers, rotar arm and dizzy cap. besides having my head gasket blown twice and still waiting for rebuild.

Now ive had fords mainly in the past and Ive never known a car so unreliable as this. The car is on the verge of being repaired and sold. Clio 1.8 16v: Great when theyre working and an absolute nightmare when they go wrong!

So far (3 months), Ive just had a wheel bearing go, but it is a wheel bearing that was replaced when I got the car. Munched its way through it in 4000 miles!!!

If mine needed all that doing to itd, Id be fairly pissed off too!

only thing is you have spent so much if you sell it it will probably be sweet for ages and you will have thrown away a load of cash on what will now probably be a reliable car

All fast (oldish) Renos are mint when they r working and a BLAG when there not. The Clio 16v shouldnt blow head gaskets very easirly though IMO.

Yeah i love the cars performance, but its just abit annoying. when i got the car it had 45343 k on it and its now got 48001k thats less than 3k in it and all this work.....oh dear.

Mines been on the road for 3 months outta 6. And i know just how you feel, i must have spent over 2k on her. New gearbox, alternator, clutch and cable, Power steering hose, steering rack, new exhaust, 2 wheels bearings, battery, cam belt, Fan belt and a partridge in a pear tree. And then i crashed it. Doh!

Yeah, buy 1, but make sure that the previous owner has had everything repaired when it went or else u may have to do everything at the same time like 16v_er & Dust.

The engines are pretty strong IMO, so jus check everything like steering rack, wheel bearings, etc.

For every geezer whos had 1 which has needed so much work there is about 5 who have had it relativly care free (it is a Reno remember).

Get a good 1 & its unlikely u will have as many problems. Just bad luck 4 those 2 IMO.

Apart form the clutch going recently, i only had to replace a CV joint the exhaust manifold heatshield, the clutch cable and accelerator cable on mine in the year and a bit ive had it

My 16v was a mare when I first got it, but has been fine since I got on top of it all. 99k miles and runs better than an atomic clock.

Rhys - if a wheel bearing went in 4k miles then it wasnt fitted properly. Same happened to me too. Its got to be done with a proper press. My mechanic reckons 90% arent fitted right.

Ive had my valver for 19 months, and in that time ive done 21k, So far (touches wood) ive had one wheel bearing replaced! Ive had other stuff done but nothing that was neccesery.

Ive just done mine using a welder, a vice, and a big hammer!!!!! You dont need a press, thats just the easy way to do it!!!!!!!

wot used car is not gonna cost money! you could be really sad and do up a micra, or you could have a car with good power and superb handling and great fun to drive. Sure I have spent 2.5k in the last year but my car is wicked fun. Renos arent built like golfs or mercs but they are alot better in my opinion!

Just stick it out mate. I have had bills in excess of a grand in the last 14 months since owning mine. Its an old car and hard to work on. Its handy if you know someone in the know about them. I would have saved loads if I knew people who worked on em when I first got mine. Its all labour charges, the parts arent even expensive.
