clio 172 at 18 ?

Im looking to upgrade my car to something faster and the clio 172 has caught my eye.

Where is the best place to get insurance from at 18 years old? Is there any difference in the insurance premium on the cup?

Thanks
Aaron

ov just got myself and im 18 too.

A) you will love it and...
B) the insurance really will rape you ! .

You will get done over by insurance for sure!
Got my 182 at 18, but being a girl it was way under 2k on insurance

I would recommend the jump up though, I remembered tonight why I f*cking love the clio 1*2s :D

  Arctic Blue FF 182
damn, i wanted to be paying a lot less than 2k :(

Can't see that happening really mate, im 19 and been looking, and its still silly insurance. You got a years no claims?
Best bet is to just ring around.

I may be wrong, but i believe the premium for a cup is a bit more? Something to do with it not having ABS, i could be wrong there, best for someone to comfirm!

  Mk1 Clio F4R'd
Just buy a 1.2 for a year...1 years no clams and then you can enjoy the sport even more. Its what i'm doing lol

  BMW 330D
Insurance will be ridiculous!
It has been said time and time again, buy a small engined car for the 1st year or 2 then get yourself a 172/182, premium will be a hell of a lot cheaper that way!.

i've been driving for a year and a quarter now, and i haven't crashed yet, thankfully. I've also got pass plus.

I wouldn't go for a 1.2 it's just not the same lol.

Im paying £700 fully comp with norwich union at the moment on my 1.6 *cough*sportka*cough* but they said they will not insure anyone under 25 on a 172.

  In between cars....
Get somthing middle of the line to at least get some driving experience, vts, 106 gti, polo gti they will all be more managable and a bit cheaper to run, theyre group 12/13 cars, makes a big difference

  BMW M135i
Had mine at 19 and still had to pay £1700 for it insurance wise. Looked at it at 18 but having b****cks made it non viable on the insurance front so I bought a 1.6 for a year.

  B/G 182 + PH1 Track
Not worth the insurance premium imo (tell that to my brother tho) Got my 182 at 20, with 3 years no claims. Still pay to much on insurance. It is nice to have a powerful car, but want something quicker now :< So bought the track car :D

  mk 2 172
the realy wont to be fully comp ona 1*2 aswell i pretty sure no one will insure you fullycomp. geta a small engine car for now even if its for a year or so.

Cups an insurance Group 16 same as the rest of the 172/182s

There are no short cuts with insurance mate, there not daft and in there eyes, you are the biggest liability on the spectrum of drivers.

There are plenty of other cars out there that have that "punch" when you need it.

I went from a 1.2 Clio 5 years ago to a C2 GT (ins grp 6) and it went up nearly £600 then back down £700 the following year.

You should consider doing somthing simillar, i certainly wouldnt be paying upwards of £1000 for car insurance, no f**king way

  Clio Sport 1.4 MK2
You wont get insured on that mate why not try for a 1.3 Turbo Starlett it punches quite a kick and I got a quote for £1,700 at 19 with 1 Years NCB :)

I'm getting a 172 later this week.

I'm 17, and insurance won't be much of an issue (have it in Dad's name, yet have it so it's insured when I drive it, too. Much cheaper that way)

  Audi S1

1st car... 172... not a gd idea....

When i got in my clio i was kanking it from the power... he probably learnt in something like a corsa... with 40bhp...

  wait and see ;)
ive not even passed my test yet but even ive realised you have to respect the car no matter how much power it has, but buying a 172 for a first car imo is just silly, he will probly get carried away with the power and put it straight into a hedge

Insure it properly you daft b*****d. Insurance companies arent thick, you crash the 172 they will soon be asking questions as to who drives the car the most and if it turns out to be you then you will get dry humped by them.

  Clio on SL 2118s
get a 106gti. thats what i would look at.
lovely cars, rapid and less insurance at group 13.
although ive also read that its expensive to get insurance on them at 18.
would love one of those when im 18.

That happened to me when i was 17 (a long long time ago) was named on my mums but they found out she had another car so it was obvious that i was the main driver of the crashed one. Not worth messing with insurance, always play it safe, declare all mods and correct annual millage etc.

The only decent way to get the premium down abit is to put your mum/sister/girlfriend on the policy. even if they never drive it.

Dont be a fool mate, if/and when you wrap it round a tree the insurance company will know exactly whos doing the "bulk" of the driving

There not stupid mate!

Look, I'm not going to wrap it around a tree.
I'm no hoon, okay?
Just because it's my first car doesn't mean I'm going to crash it. I will be responsible, a few people in my family have been in pretty bad crashes, and I'm not going to follow suit.

Also - It's not like I'm doing anything illegal? Dad will drive it when I'm not.

(Don't want to start any fights here, either, I like this place alot already.)

Hi, appreciate you like the forum, so I'll try and explain why everyone might get a bit arsey about this in a nice way.

If you aren't going to be driving the car the majority of the time you've got nothing to worry about, because you are exactly what it says on your policy, a named driver. If you are infact lying to the insurance company to get a cheaper quote, than that's illegal I'm afraid. This style of obtaining insurance has a knock on effect to all of those who pay for their own insurance legitimately. So you will get people sounding annoyed.

As for the 172 and being only 17, I don't think you appreciate how much car you're getting, I certainly know that I was no where near mature enough or responsible enough to handle anything more than the 1.3 fiesta that I drove round at your age.

Just take care, and don't fulfill the stereo type that everyone has put on you

I won't.

With regard to the car - The guy selling took me for a drive in the hills.
When he was driving, I was getting pretty scared. He wasn't going terribly fast, either. There is a shift light in the car. Well, a box with 4 lights. As you get closer to redline the lights progressivly come on. He got to 1 light and I had to tell him to slow down.
I am totaly aware of what the car is capable of, and I intend to drive it safely.

I'm not after an adrenalin rush, but for my budget, it's the nicest car I could find. If I could find a car as safe, one which sounded as good, and had a nicer interior for $10,000 aus I would buy it, regardless of engine size or it's top speed.

:)

how can you say you wont crash it? nobody can say they will 100% not crash a car to be honest. You can reduce your chances by driving safely but its still not 100% that you wont crash. The smallest of things can produce crashes.

i got my 172 at 18, full comp under my own name. The only way to do it to be honest as i would be driving it 99% of the time. They are alot of car to handle especially considering you wont have had much driving experience. Even though i have been driving over a year and a half now i am still learning. If you know somebody who does track days i would advise going out on a track with them, as it will soon make you realise driving on the road is very slow considering what you can do on the track.

just take care :)

Read the quote you dumb s**t.... whats funny about you wanting to get a 172... as i said im in the same boat as you alot of people dont like people driving 172s... its a cliosport thing they hate young drivers driving them!....

You will get a lot of stick as well when you tell them how much you pay on your insurance... my advice if you want the car and can afford it... do it! dont listen to others...
