clio 172 head flow

hi all,l.a.d motor sport told me they can get an extra 20 ponies just from a head floe and timeing adjustments is this any way true it seems a lot

getting the head to flow a substantial amount more is not hard, but you will be loosing substantial amounts of velocity.

In my opnion, its not worth it at all. Youll be much better off buying some throttle bodies rather than running on the OE TB and inlet manifold. Its highly restrictive. We have had a 172 run 215BHp with only a set of throttle bodies on.

General rule, the good heads that come with good power (porting, etc for better flow) are the 8v engines. Just because most of them are ancient and in the earlier days not that development on flow.

16v dont give that much good gains (even thou gives better flow than a 8v worked head; dont get me wrong) when ported, polish etc etc.

like BenR said, go for a less restrictive inlet. If you can afford, then YES work the head also because NOW its the head that is the restrictive element.

1st- better inlet (TBs for example; custom remap)
2nd- head work (custom remap)
3rd- full new exhaust kit (Gr N ones usually do the trick; custom remap)

I would go on stages with this... if I owned a va va BOOM!

where did u get that from?

any head is limited to a finite amount of flow as its valve area indicates, which is the only reason why 4 valves per cylinder and 5v per cylinder were invented, to make better use of cylinder cross-sectional area. A 16V head can be improved just as much as an 8v.

E.g......the crap zetec, the crap gold 16V....the crap golf 8V.......

note, finite flow is at specified pressures.....i.e. the same head will flow more at 25" H20 than at 10"......

BenR and what TB set do you use? from tecnomap??

and are TB + custom remap (only) give you the 215hp?? did you drive the car after?? tell me about it.. (got a mk2)

thanks

viva orlandopaulo. Fala com o BenR sobre os detalhes do uso de TBs no RS... esquece a tecnomap. Prefere mais por quem ja o fez e obteve bons resultados. O homem domina o assunto!!!

Benj, I was talking of the gains in %... 8v heads have more % gains because they are not so well developted has the 16v.
Didnt say that 16v couldnt be improved on flow.

NO doubts that its better to have a std 16v than a worked 8v. Thats the reason for a CVH becoming a ZVH.

I dont prefer the Fez.....well......kind of....LOL

The clio it ran on uses what Renault sport gave us, so i have no idea as to who made them. But the make of the TB isnt the issue, they all do teh same thing, only diff is manufacture quality and any special features. Im trying to get my own TB design down on paper, and am checking patents so ill let everybody know how it goes. Only problem is space and they will be a bit bigger than normal TBs.......but offer perfect flow at full throttle yet keep a decent variable resistor. Shhhhhh

ANyway, they were put onto a cliocup racer....or a MK1 with MK2 panels. We junked the ignition control and went full management. Previously it did 0-100mph in about 11 secs, after it did a rough 10......

I did drive after, but not for long as mapping wasnt 100% and i left Zhu Hai before it was completed.........

trust me, you wont be disappointed.

Butre, Benj!!!???

I was talking propotionate flow gains too.....remember, 2 ports, 2 valves, 2 places to gain flow, rather than 1.

The ZVH is a hybrid.....and a cheap mod to get more power, it is also stronger as teh CVH can go porus. And it can flow more purely due to larger total valve area. They work good with the turbo too........

BenR have you seen the other topic abou 172tbs? im realy getting interested in tbs thing.. but need help.. never done it.. dont know what parts to buy, neither where..and in the end ill still have to go to a tuner to make the program, but ir seems realy interessant.. nitro is much easyer, lol:)

my ideas are untill now:

Filter + Cams + Program....20bhp....1300EUR or 850pounds

Nitro + controller(like ecu based on a 3dmap)....40-50bhp...1300EUR or 850pounds

TBs.....lets see..45bhp completly atmosferic...is a good idea..

what would be your option?? would you prefer nitro plus lim at 7500rpm insted of tbs??? and between nitro and program+camsfilter bmc??

thanks

a filter and diff cam wont do much on the std injection arrangement. Youll move the powerband up with no real gain....the std cam is especially good already. And since the std camis capable of 215bhp as i have tested then that just shows the std inlet manifold and injection is more ofa factor than the cams.

N20 is fun, but i would ratehr go for the throttlebodies.....anyday.

Even when ona progressive controller......i got bored of my N20......dont use it anymore really.

ok gonna talk whith a portuguese tunner to see how much will his fee be..

if it dosent cum to a lot of money on mounting and programing new ecu..ill go to tbs..

but then ill need some help to know where to get all the parts..if thats not a problem to you ill bug ya latter with a lot of questions ok?

Ive seen a couple of engines using TBs... the power figures are very good, at every rpm. Thats the surprise!!!

and the sound.... damn.

Just I guess no one here in Portugal can do this... maybee on a willy/valver, but not on a 172. :( electronics its #"$"$%"#%

nah...any car....just get rid of the OE ECU they are crap crap crap....dont even bother with OE ecu, trust me.
