Clio 172 in limp mode

I currently have a phase one 172 (x plate) when driving home last night on the motorway the car decided to go into limp mode as soon as you hit 4000 rpm. Any revs below this and the car drives fine. When it goes into limp mode the car jerks, engine management light comes on and also the temp warning light. As soon as you dip the clutch pedal and the revs drop below 4000 rpm the lights go off and car returns to normal. The temperature never rose above half and there is plenty of coolant in the system. The car will also do this if your stationary and rev to 4000 rpm. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Im in need to get it fixed a bit quick.
