Clio 172's

  Clio 172
Thats good then, what mileage was yours on? Like I say i'd like something less than 80k, somewhere near 60-70 would be wonderful lol but its all about right place at the right time. I've been browsing ebay, pistonheads, gumtree and autotrader. distance isn't too much of a problem I travelled a 4 hour round trip to get my ZS lol

but that sounds good if you managed it all at that sort of price and i'm no stranger to travelling for specialists either I went all the way to Essex for a remap!

If I do end up getting one with the belts etc needed i'll pop up a thread, don't want to bother people more than I already am as I know newbies tend to put up the same threads over and over, I don't see anything in the search but i'll check out the specialists if I get a membership first see where they are located.

Thanks :)

Don't rule it out as an option though... as a great car could crop up and all it needs is belts.

I just bought my Flame 172 which is a non-cup phase 2 car (see this thread) and its a fantastic car in fantastic condition. The only thing it needed was belts, but that was hugely reflected in the price and as a result left plenty in my budget to get the belts done by Diamond Motors, which includes both belt kits, a dephaser pully and an oil and filter change.

That means I'll have LOADS of life in the engine from the word go; not having a belt change due in a year or two looming over my head knowing how much it cost, and if I want to sell it just before the belts are due - it'll take longer to sell and for a lot less money. I have also instantly increased the saleability and value of the car by getting the work done by a well renowned and reputable specialist on this forum - what's more, he's come out at the cheapest so I'm more than happy.

I personally wanted a car that needed its belts doing, so I knew that they were done right by a garage of my choice, and not going by the word of the seller with the old, "my mate works for a garage so did it as a cash job for me, so thats why I havn't got any receipts". Even when sellers can produce receipts for parts, you don't know the work has been done to the correct standard (cambelt jobs are a very specialist job on this car due to the floating cams, just do a search and you'll realise how important it is to get them done correctly). Hell, after reading this forum, I didn't even want a car that had its belts done at North West Performance for fear of the many bad write ups (I know there are plenty of positive stories too, but didn't wanna take my chances).

So, don't write off a car that needs its belts doing as long as it is priced accordingly and everything else stacks up (condition & other service history).

It would also be worth while joining the forum if you are truly serious and committed to getting a 172. It opens up a wealth of information that was invaluable for me when I bought my car.

I reckon you're looking at similar 172's with a similar budget as I was just a couple of weeks ago, so if you need owt else feel free to ask.

Personally I think this is good advice.

I turned down the chance of a Phase 1, totally original, in excellent condition, at a good price just because it needed the belts doing within 12 months.

Instead, I picked one, same price, but had the belts done, but not in as good condition. The dephaser hadn't been done and started very noisy, the car needed a VERY significant amount of TLC, and overall, I ended up getting the belts done anyway (the belts were only 18 months away anyway and if you'd discovered the state of the rest of the car, you would have done too) and the rest of the work that needed doing. Ended up costing me a grand more.

As said, if you see one in great condition at a good price that needs belts, get it, and as already said you can get them done at a place of your choice.

Wowzers.... I didn't think about buying a clio.

I saw an advert on ebay. Messaged the guy. Drove to Wigan. Gave him money. Drove off..... At the end of the day its just a car. With all second hand cars there is some risk - so its better to get a good deal and drive away.

And I like somebody's post about doing the cambelt yourself. I do this with all cars I buy, regardless of its history. I'm in the stage of changing most engine sensors. I like things to be tip-top, and not give me grief in a years' time. Easier to spend spend spend when you buy the vehicle and not have to fork out again for a couple years or so!

:D

If you haven't bought a car yet - just buy any one buddy. They're all the same - you'll enjoy it I'm sure!

I'm sure we have a thread dedicated to "Cup Culling Season" Every time the white stuff rears it's head lol

In all honesty you won't notice a difference, Between the PH2 I've drove and the PH1 with no aircon and cup suspension the difference is negligible - My PH1 feels a little more raw at best but it's probably more of a placebo effect.

However the cheaper belt changes without aircon is nice.

clearly people who dont have a clue how to drive in the snow.. i drove mine from bedford to the north east around xmas time when we had bad snow etc and i went all over the shop to south shields etc from peterlee... cheaper belt changes i wouldnt know as mines 1 of the buggers with aircon

Well I did think about buying one and i'm glad I did as I don't have a money tree and if I bought one and the belts snapped because I didn't realise they had to be changed in such short times i'd have been screwed.

It's all been invaluable information to me tbh and will help me on the hunt for a good one instead of a mistreated one.

Hello Knuckles.

I dont get notifications from threads on this forum (haven't learnt how to use the functions yet). I am from everywhere and nowhere. Currently residing in a small town called Lowestoft. England's most Easterly Town!
