clio 197 cams....are they worth it?

Are cams in the clio 197 worth it?

looking at £1200 to buy fit and map them.

Just wondering whats everyone else found with there 1*2's?
 
yes, but imo you need aftermarket ECU as the stock ECU seems to have a habit of slowly reverting back to the original map.

so my car is mapped at the min with the rstuner.

Should i re-load the map now and agian?

eventually looking at stand alone and ITBs
 
Yes you will probably need to reload the RS tuner map on a regular basis. This comes from a conversation with someone at the weekend who has a heavily modifed 197 including cams etc.

Stock ECU mapping sucks full stop. Imo forget cams, just get a standalone, will give similar gains to cams and remaping the Renault ECU but wont idle at 3k and is future proof.

No it won't give you the same gains as cams as you are still limited with regards delivered air mass i.e. there is no more of it. Just because you can put the fuel and spark in a different place doesn't mean you'll create more power - the standard ECU is already calibrated to achieve MBT at as many points as possible and runs KLSA anywhere else.

There are a lot of reasons for fitting an aftermarket ECU and it can be very justified but don't think you'll find more power just because of it!

Point me in the direction of a 197 with cams that idles at 3k... Oh wait... you cant.

I've explained why the 197 needs aftermarket above, this is the ONLY reason it needs it. The ECU is simply far too clever.

The ECU itself may not give more power per say, but my car made more power and torque through the range on a standalone than other cars with cams and stock mapped ECU's done by popular stock ECU tuners.

My faith in the current climate to map standard Renault ECU's isn't that great, so I'm more going off real world results that what can theoretically be achieved, but you make a fair point none the less. I should word things more carefully, but I'm lazy.

Can you map the stock ECU on all models of Clio's Icarus? I have a stock ECU for a Williams that increased performance, but over time got slower and less economical in terms of delivered MPG. Taking the battery off for several hours would cure it, but it does become a little annoying.

Have these cams fitted myself, dyno'd at 211bhp up from a std 192bhp, no bad gains.
But bloody expensive cams ( £700 just for parts + another £120 for cambelt kit! )

As for the ECU, mines been mapped for around 4 months now and i too heard this little rumour about the ECU going back to std setup so went back to where i had my remap done and asked em to check it. Everything was how they left it, still running 211bhp too.

Not saying it doesnt happen, but it hasnt to mine.

From spking to kevo at FCS i was under the impression the reason his map kept leaning out was due to his custom induction kit causing havoc with a few sensors...

Cant he ECU revert back to original setup? I guess NOT, sounds like crap to me, is like saying you install windows XP and one morning then you have 2000, isn't it?

The ECU does NOT ever revert to stock unless flashed back with a programmer. There are other reasons why things can change and as with any development it can take time to get things perfect.

Have these cams fitted myself, dyno'd at 211bhp up from a std 192bhp, no bad gains.
But bloody expensive cams ( £700 just for parts + another £120 for cambelt kit! )

What cams you got ben? Im looking into this at the me and trying to decide whats best to go for, cant seem to find many places that do em?:S where did you get em from? What has the torque fig's gone up to now? Did you get them fitted somewhere or do it yourself. If so what sort of price was it coz i take it from those figure's you had it mapped as well?

My torque figure didnt produce as impressive results as my bhp, due to me running a decat which increases bhp but loses alot of mid range torque. The car is dead until at least 4500rpm. Cant remember torque figures off the top of my head.

Fitting was £400 and the remap was another £400. Any more questions just ask mate.

Cheers ben, where abouts are they based? Did you pay 700 for the cams? Are they the 402's?

Thats def some good gains from yours, impressive 192bhp from standard, i hope mines about the same, it was run in well lol!!

Whats the induction set up on yours?

take it 192bhp was a standard car?

then u got decat-cams n map?

Car was standard running 192bhp yes, to get 211bhp i had cams, decat and yozzasport exhaust and matched inlets with PTFE gaskets to suit.

Induction setup is standard airbox with Panel filter and heatwrapped, slight gains to be had from Induction kit but its alot of money/hassle, best speaking to kevo about that.

Worth noting that with the decat you'll get about 5-7bhp more top end but as you can see the torque clearly suffers! :dead:

Had the Apollo myself, well bought it but never fitted it. Was told it actually lost bhp.

How did you find it after fitting, it looks the tits but dont wanna risk power loss.

but the noise would make up for a slight loss IF it did loose anything!
