not good news, reason i wouldnt buy a 197 is gearbox is a ticking bomb. not sure where you stand as you have said the warranty doesnt cover the gearbox :dapprove:

I would be contacting Renault uk and making a complaint, I seem to remember a thread on here about a gearbox going and renault uk replaced it for free out of warranty.

They 'may' make a contribution, but at 56k I wouldn't count on it

At 56k RUK are unlikely to make any kind of contribution unless you're the original owner and you've got full dealer service history (which you're not if its come from Evans Halshaw 5months ago) but it never hurts to try. Every 6 speed box; NDO, PK5/6 and TUx have always been weak between 3rd and 4th due to the bearings and synchros design... Its just one of those things you need to buget for. My Laguna has a slight crunch at cold in 3rd so I just double clutch till its up to temp and it doesn't do it but even with myself removing and rebuilding my PK6 unit it is going to take me nearly 3 days and cost me close on £350 and that's just in parts (also not including a new DMF, Valeo clutch kit and slave cylinder that will also be going in at this time which will bring the job closer to a grand when its done).

A fully rebuilt and warranted TUx, supplied only, will be around £750-900 or you could take a chance on a £200-450 second hand unit that you've not had chance to test so I guess it all boils down to how much the car means to you and how long you're likely to keep it for as you'll have to add in the cost of someone removing and refitting it all to and its not a small job. Have you been back to Evans Halshaw to see if they're willing to offer any genuine help yet?

Mick

Would recommend Agency Transmissions for box rebuilds if you go down that route. Really cheap as well for what you get.

What do they charge for a 6-Speed mate? Last time I looked the bearing and synchro kit was around £170 + VAT

I bet he offered sexual favours though - I really don't trust that youth and you should see the outfit he's asked me to wear tomorrow to change his timing belt in!

Its a bit different to the JC series boxes though but I might give em a call... I hate rebuilding gearboxes especially when I'm not getting paid for it lolz

The originally quoted £280 + VAT but, Gray can be very persuasive ;)

You will find this out when you've changed his cam belt and you're no better off.

As said - give Renault UK a call, there is loads of 197's with the same problems so they cant turn round and say they dont know nowt is wrong with them! nothing to lose really.

it is theirs yes and its got a list of parts not covered and one is the gearbox ill have to double check as it might be for normal wear and tear and i believe this is a common fault so cant see them putting it to that when it a know issue

It doesn't matter that it isn't covered under warranty - you are protected by your consumer rights. But you need to start this very quickly.

Effectively (according to the sale of goods act) any fault that is found within the first six months of owning the car is pretty much automatically deemed to have been present at the time of purchase, and if the fault was there at the time of purchase, the car was not fit to be sold.

This works incredibly well in your favour, as it would be up to the dealer to prove that the fault was not there at the time of purchase. Something that is impossible.

It is the dealers responsibility to fix the issue and you need to go in there and remind them of this, making sure to emphasise that this is regardless of the warranty.

It's important that you report this issue to them first though, and it's worth seeing what they say before going in guns blazing.

Is this a common fault on all 197's or just on earlier models ?

All mk3's that includes 200's.

Ive never personally had an issue with 2006, and now 2008 197's, i think a lot of it boils down to mechanical sympathy (or lack of)

well i phoned evan halshaw another dealer where i didnt get car from out or curiosity and quoted £1000 for a repair to the gearbox so i guess thats for syncromesh or anything that needs repairing or they told me £1500 for a new fitted gearbox, this is what im expected to pay if i dont win and get them to foot the bill :(

I hope you followed this.

Result.

Renault boxes are pretty poor. My 172 wouldn't go in 1st unless completely stopped and had a crunch 3rd to 4th. 182 seems spot on so far, fingers crossed.

Hopefully yours should be good for another 56k now, says a lot for buying from a dealer though doesn't it. I got my 182 from Evans Halshaw.

i know what you are saying but cars sorted they claimed off their warrenty company and as long as i didnt pay for it jobs a good un

My '08 197 has just started exhibiting the same 'crunch' issue into 4th gear - is it nigh on guaranteed to be the common problem with the syncro?

I have emailed R UK to highlight this to them and complain, asking them what they plan to do to rectify this common fault, can anyone who has had this problem in the past shed any light on how they approached RUK with regards to this problem?

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
can I add to this thread-

I purchased a 197 yesterday that had a brand new Renault TL4 gearbox the week before-

RUK already offer a 50% discount on part- I can see from the invoice that the previous owner paid £800 all in for a new box on the renault invoice-

I bet if you push you will get it cheaper- however its good to see RUK recognise the issue...

S

PS it was 4th gear syncro on a 57 plate

Thanks for the heads up. I've messaged someone on 197.net who said he managed to get ~85% with the same fault so I'm hoping to get some pointers from him!

Sorry for the thread revival...

Had my car into the main dealer on Monday to get their recommendaction of a £2k new gearbox (4th gear crunch) only to discover a) The RAC warranty that a different main dealer gave me doesn't cover main dealer labour charges and b) the warranty company wants someone to diagnose the specific problem to see if it's repairable.

Off to an indy gearbox specialist I go and they've discovered that the 4th gear synchro is shot and 4th gear is worn down - a warranty assessor is going to look at the gearbox tomorrow or Monday but the garage suspects they'll call it 'wear and tear' and not cover it...on a 4 year old 37k car!

Had an open line of communication with Renault complaints department the whole time (both regarding **** dealer provided warranty and chocolate gearbox) and they've said that if the warranty company mug me off that they'll review it...fingers crossed as I don't fancy £570+vat for the repair the garage has quoted!

Can anyone who has had positive outcomes PM me with their vague details of their issue and what contribution they got towards repair? A reg would be handy as if there's a precedent with other cars it would be good to be armed with the particulars!
