clio 197

I can agree with the re-map situation. Got my car back yesterday and they re-mapped it and bottom end torque feels much better, i thought it was an animal anyway but now it feels much better, its really noticable. Mines a 57 plate F1.

I went from a 182ff to this and after having driven one again a while ago, i could never go back, mk2's are still REALLY good fun cars but i prefer the way the power/handling just everything about is a step up.

Makes me laugh when folks say, do this do that to your cup and you will be a "197 hunter" but that isnt really the point. If i did the same to a 197 it would be the same if not quicker and like wise with williams over all mk2's. Turbo a 17/182 and you got a skyline hunter!!

Renaults power upgrades have never been drastic on any new model, it just gets better at it everytime!
I think the 197 is a very under rated car on this site and half the people who **** it off haven't even driven one, its more of an animal than people think.

Thats my 2pence, hope you find the car you want mate.:)

as much as i love my ph1, i know il be getting 197 when i can afford it, and tbh iv had a few blats with 197s and i usually have the upper edge, but will that stop me from getting one? NOPE! the 197 is a better all round car and i cant wait till the time comes when i can afford one

you will love a 197 I guarantee it! I have played mine against my friends 172 and straight line speed they are a dead heat theres nothing in it and this was pretty much the same with the guys in convoy to FCS this year aswell and remember my engine wasn't worn in properly yet its still loosenin up ;) The handling is awesome it is just planted and the brakes are equally impressive and this is all standard. Also, imho the 197 look better than the 1*2s despite being bigger :rasp:

^^ a great looking car kneel, a bit like my red one i bet it looks amazing on a really sunny day in bright sunshine, as the bottom pic suggests!

cheers man, the red looks v nice aswell but rb was the favourite after meeting fisher price missile all those months/years ago

well im getting excited about 197s now. onwards and upwards and the prices are great at the mo, if your buying that is.

I went from this,

The 197 is also running H&R coilovers. Would i go back to a MK2? Well if i had to, Only a 172 Cup, or Trophy would suffice. I'd now see it as a downgrade ;) The build is soooo much better than the MK2's. The seats/seating posision is much better too, as are the brakes. Also love the noise they make as standard. I HATE loud aftermarket systems, but the 197 is perfect. The gearbox is a peach, tight gates, and short throw, perfect for a B road hack  My 197's had a hard 26k, and is easily as quick as my 172 imo, engine is less 'gruff' :)

good stuff, they are still relatively rare, i can go weeks without seeing one so you will be joining an exclusive connoisseurs collective of distinguished ladies and gentleman who enjoy the finer driving experience ;)

Plus also, its quality getting the moody looks and blanks from Civic Type R owners, who WISH they had bought a 197 instead!

Indeed!!! Was done over two days lol. Wheels off, arches cleaned out etc etc!!! Do miss it sometimes, had 74K there too!!

i thought my cup was clean but thats just obsessive. lol a few hours must of been put in there.

+1 that is the cleanest one i hae ever seen!

Gaz how did you get those cup calipers clean like that, or are they painted, cant quite make the photo out?

Painted mate, did them over easter this year. Look 100% better than the standard cast finish. Easier to clean too. I *may* have gone over the calipers with some autoglym a week before the photo's :o

^^ the 197 calipers look great, sorry jusst realised i was confusing the issue, i meant the 172 cup calipers, which look like they have just been taken off the factory shelf, they look immac!

I can never get the brake dust and dirt marks off mine so wondered if you used anything special on yours to get them looking new?

Ah, they were also painted Silver lol!!! They are a pain when just the metal finish, as you probably realise with the Brembos. The dust seems to etch into the castings :( With a painted Caliper surface, i just spritz some Autoglym Machine cleaner? on them when washing, brush down with a paint brush, then rinse off. I sound like i have OCD, but you should see the state of the car at them min!!!

I have to say Gaz, of the 197's on here, that one is prob the best looking.
Im not a huge fan of the standard 197 looks wise.....the same with the standard 172, but the R27 and Cup does appeal.

...... go on, you know you want to!!!;) Tbh the 197 can look a little ungainly from some angles, i always think they look much better on the road/in the flesh. They are also hard to photo for some reason :( The future is here ;)

Lol....yeah yeah, alright, you have had me concede i like the look of your little number...but lets not push it.
Im not about to take a step backwards in the rapido stakes...hehe.;)

Jump on board Ollie - don't fight the feeling - invest in a blue one, take out all the seats. Just imagine, you'll be able to be seen in a 197 + have xenons + strip it lightweight + have no car key (i think the handsfree card is lighter than the car key?!) :D

I'll let you take mine for a rip if that will help convert you.

thats x2 172 cup owners converted... just another few hundred to go :D

Woah woah WOAH there Alan lad! Only ONE weaker minded Cup owner converted mate....not two!
No im firmly stuck to my Cup mate. Not getting me out of that anytime soon.

I've driven a couple of 197's, one being an R27. Both were hugely impressive in terms of chassis dynamics. All four corners felt very planted even over some of the roughest country lanes i drove them down....the R27 was awesome.

But they just lacked a certain rawness that i crave, and they definitely don't have the snappy throttle response and mid range banzai ness my Cup has, and i know i'd miss that.

...it was my shallow attempt to get yours off the road so you could no longer be faster than me :D

I havent yet driven a cupped 197 or R27, my heart is set on a swap soon, i've heard mixed things about the cup suspension, that its almost too firm and that the standard set up on mine is ample enough... the bottom line is i just prefer the coloured calipers and anthracite wheels!

Gaz - when you painted your 197 brembo calipers, how did you get the brembo logo on in black? There is a local alloy specialist near me who do caliper painting, just wondering if its an easy job.

thats brilliant thank you! Deffo going to get mine done red, i might go for white decals not sure yet. It makes a massive difference to the standard silver colour.

Indeed, one of the best mods i've done!, cheap too

Haha, it's really funny that you say that because just this morning, on my way to work I saw a white 197 (cup'd I think?), and I was just staring at it. :o Looked soooo good sitting there waiting at the traffic lights, so much presence, it looked fantastic. I had a little bit of a sex wee as I drove past it I must admit. :o

However that's where the love affair ends for me, because apart from the looks, I'd rather have my CTR (otherwise I'd have bought a 197 instead of it).
