KIRKALDY IN CONTROL DURING TESTING

ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup championship leader Paul Rivett (Banstead)
could wrap up the 2002 title at Brands Hatch on Bank Holiday Monday but
it
was Scottish rival Andrew Kirkaldy (St Andrews, Fife) who led the way
in
testing at the Kent track today.

The Bintcliffe Sport Racing driver, who trails Rivett by 35 points in
the
provisional standings, looked comfortable around the 1.2 mile Indy
Circuit
as he lapped with a best time of 52.384 seconds, a full two 10ths of a
second quicker than Mardi Gras Motorsports Daniel Buxton (Cuddington)

Solihulls Oli Wilkinson posted the third quickest time for Stancombe
Vehicle Engineering, as he looks to build on a seasons best finish at
Knockhill in Scotland two weeks ago, while Martin Byford (Sudbury,
Suffolk)
was fourth with a time of 52.782.

Knockhill winner Jason Templeman (Newark) was fifth for Total Control
Racing, champion-elect Rivett was ninth for Team Firstair, a full seven
10ths of a second behind Kirkaldy, and Cambridges Robert Huff was 11th
for
Tim Sugden Motorsport.

Taking the end of season "dropped score" ruling into account at this
stage,
Paul Rivett actually leads the championship from Huff by virtue of the
fact
the Cambridge driver failed to finish round 7 of the series at Thruxton
and
therefore has zero points to deduct.

Kirkaldy meanwhile has to drop eight points as things currently stand
so a
win is vital if he has any hope of taking the championship down to the
wire
at Donington Park next month.

The battle for the NGK Laser Platinum Pole Position will be decided in
Sundays half-hour qualifying session which starts at 16.25. Mondays
25-lap
race starts at 15.20.

For full times go to www.mstworld.com

Points (provisional): 1st Paul Rivett 277pts; 2nd Andrew Kirkaldy 242;
3rd
Robert Huff 241; 4th Martin Byford 234; 5th Daniel Buxton 181; 6th Ed
Pead
179.

POTENTIAL "BEST EVER" VIEWING FIGURES FOR RENAULT

Television audience figures for Renault UKs two racing championships,
Formula Renault and the ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup, are showing
significant increases on last year through both terrestrial, ITV1, and
satellite broadcasts.

Supporting the TOCA Tour British Touring Car Championship at circuits
across
the country, both Renault series are featured on the dedicated
half-hour
night-time magazine programme Motorsport UK.

The weekly programme, aired on ITV1 during the early hours of Friday
mornings, regularly attracts over 100,000 viewers for the Renault
championships with a peak so far this year of around 135,000 - a
significant
increase on last year.

Perhaps more significantly, a further half a million viewers have tuned
in
to daytime coverage of both series so far this year with prime time
afternoon slots in the Granada, Tyne Tees and Anglia regions showing
footage
from their local circuits. The total audience for just four of these
programmes netted almost 500,000 viewers with more to come.

Motorsport UK is also featured on satellite, digital and cable channel
Men &
Motors on Thursdays at 21.00 with re-runs on Saturdays at 21.00 and
Sundays
at 19.00. The total audience figure for these broadcasts currently
stands at
over 400,000 viewers.

Tim Jackson, Director of Press and PR, Renault UK commented: "These
first
television figures for our 2002 contract with Granada Sport clearly
show our
decision to take a predominantly ITV1 route has brought an increased
television audience of the Renault championships. The daytime weekend
regional broadcasts are very successful in drawing a large audience of
significant quality giving an excellent return to sponsors for their
investment."

The great news comes as viewers in the Meridian region will be able to
view
the best action from Formula Renault UK and ELF Clio Renaultsport UK
Cup
championship races at Brands Hatch through a run of regional programmes
that
start in August.

Taken from cliocup.co.uk I take it?? I was at Brands on Monday and the Clios were almost as entertaining as the Touring cars!

  Williams 2, STi N12

I thought the cup race was the best out of the lot, with Kirkaldy and Huff giving it large.

Sat in Huffs car in the paddock and talked a few things over with the head engineer. Was a great day out.

i get the press releases emailed to me - this is via the same company who have arranged the competition for the VIP tickets for Donnington - hope you have both entered!!!

BUXTON SETS RED-HOT PACE IN TESTING

Last year’s ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup champion Daniel Buxton (Cuddington) set a scorching pace around Donington Park’s 2.5 mile Grand Prix circuit this afternoon ahead of Sunday’s final round of the series.

Under cloudy skies the Mardi Gras Motorsport driver lapped with a best time of 1m 47.597 seconds to head the timesheets from Scotland’s Andrew Kirkaldy (St Andrews, Fife) who was 0.251 seconds adrift for Bintcliffe Sport Racing.
