Clio Dci's Tuning

Hey Guys!

I was wondering whether anyone has a Dci that they have tuned up and made a particular difference. I have the 65bhp Expression version 2004 model. Extras so far, K&N Filter which gave it a great sound and new Clio sport 182 alloy wheels which made it look great!:cool:

Has anyone tried one of these tuning boxes?

Is the K&N a panel filter or did you get an induction put in ?

I've got the 04 Dynamique dci80 - no engine mods as yet
I'm thinking of a Dragon T-box (www.mrhoot.com) and some sort of filter

I got an induction kit! I must say, it made that diesel sound really come out however the turbo sound is much better. After some time you dont realise the irritating diesel sound.

Im currently looking into a tuning Box. www.tuningbox.com very easy to install.

I also wanna install a sport exhaust system buy I got a feeling that it would give off a lot of black smoke.

Trev can you send some pictures of your car? I would love to send some of mine however I dunno how to insert a photo into this Thread thing.

Trev, the induction kit is on the exterior section. You have to remove all the filter box. Basically the plastic cover of the engine has to go. Again, its easy to fit on, very basic.

I had checked out the dragon box in the past and they were not cheap. All these sites claim an increase of 25%. I never goit down to buying one for the simple reason that its not too cheap and is there such a diffrence in power? Do you have any ppl you know who have installed one on a diesel version. You car goes from 82bhp to 102bhp, which makes it quite a bomb!

Mr hoot tunning boxes are very good I've heard no negative comment and there the cheapest around.
A sports exhaust will make a bit more noise no smoke and no hp. You will only get a smokey exhaust if your cars overfuleing and unless you've got a stuipidly overpoweing tunning box or custom remap you should be fine. You'll always get a bit of smoke when you floor it even standard.
There quite a bit you can do to the dci it depends the eforrt you want to go to there a 135hp verion that somone in portugaul has tunned with a different turbo 100 dci intercooler and a few other litle bits. AN intercooler and custom reamp and you should be about 105hp
135hp is the limit realy for power though even at that level you'll get quite a bit of smoake. Any more power and you'll need new injectors/custom made ones/ 80/100dci ones (with the relevent pump upgrades with are expensive).

Intercoolers not to bad I don't know the prices but if you get one from a scrappie etc it will reduce the cost to very little.
However an intercooler won't have any effect (beyond reducing turbo heat a bit). An intercoolers advanatge can only be made when the mapping is increased way beyond what a tunning box will do. You cannot increase the fueling on a tunning box to much as there not enough air or cold air in particular. An intercooler allows you to run more boost but just as important it means the airs cooler so more dense.
The dci 80 already has an intercooler as standard its the 65 which suffers from not having one. The 80 dci intercooler isn't to bad however the 100dci is the best of the lot unless you go to a big front mounted one similar to what the VAG 150PD cars have but those intercoolers have the problem that they would be laggy on a 1.5 engine.
Reampping /tunning boxes on a dci80 will get about 100~105hp.

I'm intending on putting much time/effort/money into engine mods on the dci - it's used as an everyday car and the mpg is great :)

Plus - I'll get a 172 or a Celica when I get myself settled into a house of my own ;)

I'd be more than happy if the Dragon T-box and a filter or induction kit is "significantly effective" (giving just a little more oomph in bhp and maybe something to listen to with the revs ;) )

Tunning the engine is expensive the portuguese tunne them as they don't buy 1.2's and usuauly turbo swops are done when the stock ones blow up (its not a common problem they usuauly fiddle the boost and blow them up). If you want loads more power get a bigger engine dropped in you'll need the whole front of another Renault Megan etc realy and then have your ECU mapped to run the other egine. The 1.9 130hp would be a good engine with the 6 speed box.
If it were me tunning the engine that would be my first plan or if you want to keep the stock engine get a big FMIC remove the CAT thingies )(custom made pipe or buy a second hand one and smah the internals of it up). Then get a panel filter with a cold air intake from the front grill. Then remap. IF youy want cut the back box off and either replace it with some pipe of just leave it for some more noise less weight and slightly faster spool up.

Edde, I gotta agree with you! If a tuning box, a induction kit and a sports exhaust had to give that extra oomph, than thats the option im going with.

The problem is every time I say that im gonna buy some extra for the car I end up thinking what the hell, just get a Clio sport next year! ;) I dont really like messing around with remapping etc. So far, like I mentioned above, I got the induction kit and a set of alloys from the new 182bhp clio sport which basically gave the car a much more aggressive look and is worth every $. I definitely recommend a new set of alloys!!!

I live in Malta (dunno if you heard of Malta?) and basically the prices of cars here are a joke!!! as in EXPENSIVE! I bought my clio dci 65bhp for 6900 maltese, which is 11000 Sterling! With that money, I would have a clio sport today but screw it!! The clio sport in Malta is 19200 sterling!:eek: !!!!!!!!
When im on ebay and I see the prices clio sports are goin for, it just kills me! Problem in Malta is that there is a high Tax Import duty which inflates the price!! I really wanna try get a 2nd hand clio sport down from England next year! I would have to add approx. 5600 sterling to the price I buy it from the Uk! Currently looking into it!!! :rolleyes:

i have a speedbuster tunning box - brought me up to 98.2bhp and 180lb/ft torque outa my dci 80 clio

edde - thats some usefull infortmation, wouldnt mind 135bhp outa my dci :O

u any links to this clio???

a while ago i would have been seriously interested in doing this to my clio but i now plan to change it within the next year so im going to take a back seat on this!

a 1.9 dci conversion always tempted me but afaik it would cost quite a bit!

I have to say diesel tuning is the way forward. Mine was running 14.007 quarter miles and well over 160 bhp. All the engine tuning cost me around 3 grand and i doubled the power, and when run off boost i was looking at 44 - 46 mpg still!!
Best thing with diesels that are tuned, on motorway alongside a civic type r, both put your foot down in fifth from around 70 mph, my car used to piss on em up to around 115 then they gain due to small rev band.

id say get the injectors, get a tunit box (they r the best), get hybrid turbo, fmic conversion, straight through exhaust and youll never regret it mate!!

sorry but i disagree.

a ctr wouldnt get pissed on by a 160hp diesel. a 190hp 320lbft fabia vrs which has a engine lightyears ahed of the pugs is faster than a 172MKII but in the cup against it now im faster again if only by a small margin (well until a corner then is bye bye skoda)

i do agree however that diesel are the way forward for cheap reliable tuning with economy and low insurance (if you dont tell that is !) but actually thinkin about it the latest diesels are like grp 14 to 16 ins !!

dont take offence about the pug comment im sure it was rapid, 30-70 in my bro`s jabba`d fabia is monster but still its not as fast as a cup.
 
.. ohh and that when the cup was a bit poorley, it now run in better and pulls around 4 lenghs on it at !10 and a ctr is about exaclty the same speed as a cup (ctr is slower to 60 though)

The only gains from a IK and sports exhaust are in regards to noise spool up time will be slightly increased but its barly noticable.
You can pick up Mk1 172's over here for sometimes £4k (about 6,000 euros which might be your best bet.

What sort of terminal velocities were you running. Its just my Williams has about 180hp is totally stripped out and only runs 14.7 at 93mph. I'd say CTR's problems are down to the revs they need revving to keep up with a fast tdi. If you drop a few gears on the CTR it would make your car look slow there quick cars.
Dci owners at present don't have any upgrade injectors to go to (which ones did you use in your 206?) so thats not realy an option a whole new engine fitment would probably be cheaper.
 
i totally agree, if the ctr had of dropped a gear i would have looked quite the ****!!!
Mine had 322lb foot of torque so was outstanding at low revs....

I got my injectors sent to a company called www.dieseldynamics.com and they basically changed the nozzles. if you go to www.ls-diesel.dk this guy had the same spec as mine, but i didnt have the oppourtunity to get my final map done due to he lorry shaking hands witht he front of my car at 70mph!!

prob good idea changing engine as its not got any where near as much scope for improvement as the HDI engine!

Hello from Portugal. A friend of mine told me that you are talking about tuning a 1.5 dCi… Like I have a dCi 65 a little bite tuned, I believe I can give some information about it…
My Clio has at the moment about 100 HP at wheels and 250 NM of torque, the modifications needed to achieve this power were:

- Bigger turbo ( Garret GTV17v49 )
- Intercooler from dCi 80
- Intercooler tubes in inox and curves from Samco
- Cat removed and no EGR
- Exhaust system
- Different injectors
- Rail Box
- Remap
- Clutch

The bigger problem at the beginning was with the turbo and its cooling; after that problem solved… a bigger one appeared…
“Understand” the “Delphi” unit!
In a common rail system it shouldn’t be necessary to change the injectors, because in the remap it should be possible to change the injection timing, but in this case that it is almost impossible. We tried a lot of alterations but the engine kept entering in “safe mode”, so the solution ended to be the injectors swap…

Another problem was to raise the Rail pressure. Above 1600 bar the “Delphi” codification do not allow it, so the solution was a Rail Box! With this “gadget” we have raised it to about 2000 bar.
Running at this pressure makes that the revs still go up during a second even without throttle, but in some times it’s good, in acceleration and changing gears the revs don’t come so much down.
Another problem was the air filter. The amount of pressure the turbo makes thru such a small hole the airbox has makes them to become completely trashed. Original filter gone, K&N gone, back to original again (till the end of its days), and try to get a BMC in mean while… near by the original airbox will be modified to allow a bigger volume of air.


Besides the engine, the car also has RS front grille, Bilstein Sprint Shocks with H&R springs, OMP strut bars (front & rear), Ferodo pads. Near by, it will have full OMP Group N brake setup.

How much did all this cost you approx?

Have you done any changes on the outside of the car to cope with power? Shocks, wheels, etc?

Im currently looking into a tuning box unit which should take it up to 82bhp. Do you know anybody who has tried one on a 65hp and felt a big difference in power?

Im currently changing lowering the car by 30mm which should help road holding and give the car an agressive look. I have also installed a K&N filter.

I have already spend a lot of money, only in engine was about 1700 €.

I am using H&R springs that lower the car 30 mm, about 2 weeks I have changed the back springs for an H&R 45 mm. The shocks absorbers are Bilstein Sprint. Also, have the strut bars from OMP (front and back).


About the box, I know some people using that “gadget”, it’s a simple way to increase power. However, I really prefer a good remap, you can achieved the 100 HP!!

Jose you now need some sporty exterior changes mate. I would start off with the wheels! Wheels make a car in my opinion! I got mine off the clio sport 182. Totally changed the look!

Jose have you got a sport air filter installed?

I have a K&N induction kit gen2. I got it from a local dealer of K&N, specifally for the dci.

I have seen them available in www.potn.com and in the official K&N sites.

A diesel engine looks horrible without the cover. Problem is I cant put on the cover with the filter! Who cares, its under the bonnet and it make a gr8 sound!!! Taking the filter off and putting it back to original filter box is a piece of cake!

Just keep checking ebay for it every few days m8.
They re-list it all the time; search for "dragon dci" ;)
