It does sound lower than normal but if you're worried, take it to have a proper diagnostic performed (not a code reading session).

theres a lot of things you can do yourself before paying out for garage checks.

The easiest way to improve your MPG is to adjust driving style. Accelerating hard, using the upper revs and driving above 80mph will consume a lot of fuel and make you look a tit. Instead, accelerate gently, avoid heavy braking and use the highest gear as you sensibly can at cruise. If on motorway try to stick to 70 and hold your speed. If you choose to drive at 75mph, try to stay at 75mph. Fluctuating the speed, i.e racing some other idiot on the road or overtaking another car for no reason, will harm MPG. With good anticipation skills, unless of course you hit a traffic jam, you should never need to drastically reduce or increase your speed on a motorway.
other than that check tyre condition and pressure, remove any junk from the car, check spark plugs, service regular.

I have tried everything possible from driving very sensibly to servicing it and still my mpg slowly drops to below 30 mpg , i changed the oil and filters and reset the mpg i had it at 36.6 mpg but it has fell again so i dont no what is causing it , the alloys have been changed to 17" but i dont think this would make such a difference would it. ?

Could be something to do with the 17''s... theres a few threads kicking about which explain how, can't remember off the top of my head though.

next time you fill it up, reset the counter and drive like a 90 year old... that always gives me decent mpg. 1.4 16v too... but mk2

Mine does 34mpg fort there was something wrong with mine

Il try that and see what i get , i dont purposly drive fast anyway its just a bit annoying when i know i could run a 182 etc with the same fuel economy from what i have seen anyway , if it turns out the wheels are causing it they will be going as i only got them because i bent one of the originals

Hi, sorry to dig up this thread but I've recently bought a Clio MK3, 1.4 same as yours, but honestly, I'd love to have 29mpg, currently I'm at 9!
Now before I get blasted for being a member of the "Fast 'n' Furious" UK division :p, There seems to be some weird reading built up from the previous owner since when I received it it was at 2.1mpg and has since been increasing slowly over the past month, to my current standing of 9.

Upon plugging in diagnostic reader, the report fluctuates (as expected) around the 35mpg mark but how would I go about resetting the figure that shows up on my dash?

Cheers

Elver

PS:
My previous Clio of the same trim level, albeit the MK2 PH2, had an automatic headlights button on the end of the left stalk but It's no where to be seen on my MK3, is it found somewhere else? (I have only a Haynes manual)

Who ever had it before you must have gave it some death, as it's an average mpg if it's same as mine ?

Its almost impossible to get that low mpg, the guy probably had a belt changed so they ran the engine for a while giving a low mpg.
