Clio on classic insurance policy

  Megane R26
Does anyone insure their Clio on a classic policy? I've got the opportunity to buy my girlfriend's car for next to nothing so I was thinking of using that for commuting and then the Clio for weekends. It's a Ph1 so is nearly 15 years old. I don't have a garage which might be an issue.

For the people who do, which company do you use?

Think you will struggle to get it onto a classic car insurance. Most classic car insurers are specialists and dont just go on the age of vehicle it would need to be a genuine classic type vehicle to qualify like a MK2 Golf GTi or Renault 5 Turbo.

If you have a daily driver as well with all your NCB on it....What you could do is mirrored NCB policy but set the mileage low say 3k per year. This would give you a price close to classic car insurance and also allow you to modify the vehicle if you wanted....Plus you would earn a seperate set of NCB for Ph1.

Kind Regards

Out of interest @Neil@greenlight, what would make a car be a Classic, other than being old?

I certainly wouldn't say any of the RS clios deserve that status yet but I'm seeing mk.1 MX5s being put on classic policies (G/H reg plated cars).
Also, if it's not down to just age, who gets to determine what is and isn't classic? Surely an unmodified XR2 or Nove GTE is knocking on the door of classic status?

With cars becoming more reliable now and lasting a lot longer insurers dont really work on the age system anymore. They look at genuine classics for example you could get a 1992 Nissan Primera thats still useable everyday and wouldnt be considered a classic but a 1992 golf GTi Mk2 would be so its done more on individual cars.

Things like the 80's hot hatches would generally all be considered classic so stuff like the Nova GTE, XR2, AX Gt and all the cool cars from that period. When you modify the cars it becomes difficult to get it insured as a classic. For Example a 2.016v converted Nova would have to be insured as a modified car rather than classic.

MX5's are difficult as you can still use them as everyday cars and the values of the old ones are sub £1000 which indicates non classic statuts. We insure loads of MX5's and generally the best way to do them is on a low mileage policy as it will get the prices down close to classic car money but also allows more modifications.

Thanks Neil, I've learnt something today :)
One thing though. A 1992 Nissan Primera GT is a faaaaar rarer piece of kit than a Mk.2 GTi Golf. If anything the obscure cars should get more help to be preserved.
I'm looking at MX-3,s and how they've lost all the value they possibly can, But since they're mid-90's, I cant imagine I'll win an argument about classic status :)

Gran Turismo 2 says it's a '95 car.
Well bloody hell, never thought that.
What about a Nissan Bluebird, with a velour interior? That's pretty classic.
oo! OOOOO!
