Clio or Lupo?

  133/225/CLS AMG
I'm being a total girl about deciding what to replace my 93 Clio RT with.

I was initially in the market for spending about £2,500-£3,000 on a Clio but have kinda been swayed towards the VW Lupos.

I want a car with plenty of character and with the potential to look like a real Euro motor. Don't want anything over a 1.4 either.

Whose got experience of these and are they as good as the Clios to drive?

I'm guessing the 1.0 versions are pretty sluggish and considering I have to do the odd 120 mile drive down to my missus the 1.4 will be better option.

Your thoughts please.

Lupo 1.4 Sport or Seat Arosas with the same engine are a good buy.

Alternatively, try a 1.4 Dynamique

my gf had this choice either a lupo g.t.i or a clio 182,

we now have a rb 182 on the drive now and she's more then happy with the choice!

Now if it was a Clio 182 or a Lupo GTI, I'd be all over the 182!! lol. Especially having owned a Clio 172 and loving it. Performance wise the 172/182 is in a different league.

But now I need something cheap to run as its a 2nd car alongside my Meg 225.

The only thing I'm finding is that the Arosa's are most 1.4 autos which I don't really want. Found a black and a white Lupo, both 1.4s with the 75bhp engine. Insurance is silly cheap too!

Most of the Clios I'm seeing are Mark II phase I models whic I don't mind but would prefer the phase II.

The lupo will hold its money better and is better built.

Some cracking little euro'd ones about too

loops are good cars, they do roll around like a football with standard suspention, but there fun to drive and with coilies on aparantly they handle really well. Good community as well, im assuming youv been on clublupo and had a chat?

Well I did log onto ClubLupo but it was playing up and wouldn't let me post!! lol

I'd imagine the ride is set up for comfort but with harder suspension and wider rims should do alright.

Sounds like if I went for a Lupo I wouldn't be picking a bad motor, which is encouraging. Guess I just gotta find me a good one!

Well i ve owned a 1.2 16v Clio and now i ve got a Lupo albeit a Gti.
If i had to choose between a Lupo 1.4 and a Clio 1.2 16v I would take the Clio everytime.
The Lupo's do hold their money and do Euro very very well however there are a number of misconceptions.
They are not that well built tbh, its a cheap city car, my gti is not built that much better than my old Clio apart from the doors feel heavier.
The Clio has a better spec, a nice soft touch dash verus the brittle plastic one of the Lupo, even the outside paintwork comes inside on the Lupo. Arosa has a nicer interior, make your own judgement, I put up with the quirks of mine because its a Gti and is special although a 1.4 one, no thanks Clio all day long, much better handling too and the 1.2 16v in the clio produces the same power as the 1.4 8v in the Lupo, unless of course you get the 100hp Sport.
